Everyone here is forgetting why we created prisons jn the first place... It's because we did not want to share the 'free' land with that kind of person in the first place. It was only when they proved that they were able to live the way that the majority of people lived, that they were released beck into society.

The judges should reckon how long it would take for the criminal to change his ways, and then only put them away. But this does not happen and it is used as a punishment. The criminals even GET TO VOTE!!!

If you ask me to pay a special tax/levy for new prison I'm all in. Hate tax but hate criminals more, I know this is a short term solution but I'm tired of politicians just talking.

FTFY. As long as Joe Soap sees his politicians get away with fraud, theft, murder, etc. and with total disregard for the rule of law, he will have no incentive to not do the same. Besides, there's still more than enough scum out there that feels that they haven't had an opportunity to "eat".

How about making those jailed actually work. Put ankle monitors on them and let them pick up rubbish in the streets. Let them paint buildings to rehabilitate urban areas. Use them to sort out recycling. In short let them work for their free board and lodging

Yeah no, crime is so out of control in this country, government has lost the battle and ability to fight or control it. Over the past 2 years, crime has actually turned into a full-blown civil war in South Africa. Perhaps the police should consider a "Catch and Release" scenario. Hunt them down, catch them, warn them verbally and let them go again. After every 500th warning, you should get 1 day in jail. May well fall right within the human rights aspects of citizens as well.

Half the population of Malawi lives in poverty. The country's murder rate is almost comparable to Denmark and in fact lower than that of some European countries. SA is just particularly savage.
