The are two major problems which Sentech’s MW product:
(1) Unfair distribution of bandwidth between their customers, some have high speeds and some have low speeds. There is no fixed factor that influences whether clients are fast or slow and, what’s worse, clients seem to flip between high and low speed states.
Solution: Only Sentech can fix this problem, it resides in the management of THEIR network.
When this problem is fixed, users will experience consistent access speeds. Only then can Sentech evaluate problem (2): Inadequate bandwidth purchased from THEIR upstream providers.
(2) Inadequate total bandwidth will result in a large proportion of clients experiencing access speeds far lower than their package rated speeds. At this point Sentech will need to buy more bandwidth or incur the wrath of their whole client base. Of course, this will always be a "fsck you Sentech buy more bandwidth" problem, if you're a client, and a "Stop downloading warez, moviez and mp3z you pimply faced h4X0rs" problem, if you're Sentech. I.e. it’s a "half empty, half full" point of view issue.
(1) is clearly not a point of view issue but a real technical problem.
In fact, after having typed this I think the reason for Sentech dragging their heels on fixing problem (1) is, as soon as they do, they will have their whole user base clamouring for better access speeds rather than a "minority". They'll be out of the frying pan and into the fire…
Of course an ethical, competent approach to these two intertwined problems would be fixing the bandwidth allocation problems and ensuring they have purchased sufficient local and international bandwidth. I'm not holding my breath …
As it stands Sentech are using (2) to hide (1), a most despicable and unethical way to handle things. But as the differences between the problems are fairly “subtle” they will probably be lost on the press.
Personally, I've given up on MW, after vowing that I would subscribe. Sentechs lastest "acceptable use" sabre rattling has been the final straw for me. Going to get ADSL in the interim until the dust has settled on the whole wireless scene. I can pay on a monthly basis and at least I know exactly what I'm getting.
IBurst looks like a very promising wireless technology that will be a direct competitor to MW and will probably be launching later this year. IBurst latency look set to handsomely undercut MW's latency...
