No more 3GB caps, no more installation delays, no more rotating IP addresses, no more rip off pricing, no more traffic shaping, no more Telkom arrogance!

Just heard from Sentech they will launch their licensed high-speed national Wireless-DSL end of Nov to compete against Telkom ADSL. You'll be able to surf in most cities using their service. And it's sub-R850 (or less).

From 30/11/03 I will no longer use my Telkom ADSL!

Good riddance to these monopolists.

It would be interesting to see if Telkom tries to "improve" its ADSL service since they have competition!

Personally I am going to ditch them come the end of November

All sounds good except that the info @ http://www.sentech.co.za/whatson/?articles=159 indicates a cost of R3k per month?

ASF: That article refers to the Sentech Satellite Offering. I made a comment in another post that Sentech doesnt update their site frequently enough.

If this is the case, I can see a lot of us moving over to Sentch. This will include a lot of Telkom's ISDN users too - then lets see them cry. Can't wait.

Can somebody explain how I will be able to connect to Sentech from my Telkom connected line without having to pay Telkom 1st, other than via Satelite?

Just another dumb user [xx(]

nice.

so is it wireless DSL that sentech will be offering??

how the performance on wireless will be like? (ex: speed, latency for gaming etc.)

also interested to see telkom's response on this.

Still can't understand why it is called wireless dsl. Should be something like wireless broadband connection or last mile. DSL is a digital subscriber line, something that wireless is not.

Anyone know what frequency they'll be using and what standard (802.11a/b/g)?

heh actually it is called Wireless Broadband (read: Broadband Wireless).

There will be a few packages, from initial offerings of 50:1 contention ratios down to the likes of 20:1. This is above and beyond their VSTAR service.

I wonder how this will effect ISP's - I assume that Sentech will be selling this service direct to the consumer.

At the moment ISP's cant provide their 'own' service short of reselling Telkoms effort, if a lot of people move away from ADSL to the Sentech offering then they get taken completely out of the loop - by forces completely out of their control.

So ISP's realistically will only be able to provide a dial-up service. As an ISDN user I would certainly consider the Sentech option and i'm sure if the service is good a lot of ADSL users as well - therefore cutting straight into ISP's back pockets.

If Sentech cannot even keep their website updated , what service can one expect from them?

WTF is wireless DSL? It is impossible. DSL = digital subscriber line. It is a technology how to send higher than normal frequencies over a pots line.

Regarding the Wireless DSL, I think its more comparable to ISDN.
This is only corridor talk but there are several packages soon to roll out but the current Residential Packages is a 128/128 and possibly a 64/64 or maybe anything between 256 and 64 whatever suits the client.
Installation is the same as the Satellite service except instead of beaming up to a satellite you will beam into one of our towers which will then inturn send you on a local backbone of which we have struck a good deal with IS.
Current installations are Brigston - Pretoria - Durban North - Tigerberg - (up to 15 km radius or line of site).
International will be via Satellite.
All options like static IP, 24/7, no cap etc will be part of package.
Telkom do not have anything whatsoever to do with this system in any way.

I will say we have been totally overwhelmed by the interest and orders.
For example, in Durban we started off with a building with max 6 racks (10,000 users per rack), we have already extended the building with place for 12 racks and we have not launched the system yet :)

Just a note here with the satellite system 512/50 if there are not many users on, downloads are not restricted (hope it stays like this), in otherwords not like ADSL where your max is 54KB/s.
Today I was downloading at 150 KB/s :)

Regarding the Website - the person who updates it resigned this week I believe so hang in there.
Please do not ask questions as I cannot answer them at this stage and am only involved on the technical and installation side but will update whenever possible.

Also please do not quote any of this information because as I said, its corridor talk :)

Let me get this straight, its wireless broadband right? through sattelite right? - what happens when it gets cloudy or rains - don't know about you but my DSTV is useless during bad weather, it stands to reason that w-dsl would do the same eh?

So much for always on, and I can just see that one of the reasons tech support would say why the service isn't working is because of the weather [;)] As the Greeks would say - to cako sou to keiro (Direct translation, your bad weather [)])

It depends on the size of the dish.
People have a tendancy to install the cheapest possible, normally a 90 cm dish then bitch afterwards.
We recommend a minimum 1.2 meter dish and where there are heavy rainfalls a 1.8 meter dish, in fact the Satellite Internet system comes standard with a 1.2 meter dish.
If you had a 1.8 meter dish on your DSTV then rainfades etc would be history.
Once a year you will suffer from sun outage for approx 10 minutes regardless of the size of the dish.
