The DSTV Pas7 satellite is @ 63 degrees east. It's not only the guys in South Africa getting signal from this satellite, and latency doesn't really matter with video signals, since the all the data eventually arrives at your tv... if it is 10 ms after the guy in Botswana, who cares?

Yeah, you can see the "lag" if you have DSTV and a seperate MNet decoder. When the rugby is on, flick between mnet and DSTV sport channel.

Instant replays! [:D]

The PAS7 satellite is located on the equator just south of the tip of India. That is why you need to point your satellite 68.5 degrees east.

The satellite has several beams. South Africa is covered by one KU band beam. India is covered by another, China by another, eastern Europe / Middle East by another.

I'm starting to get quite worried about this whole Sentech thing, it's now close on 2 weeks to the alleged launch of this Wireless networks and there is still no concrete info on pricing or availabilty, maybe it's just me but generally when you launch a new product you want people to know well in advance what the details are going to be, is this roll-out even going to happen ????

Well I'm finally back from vacation and looking at the last 2 pages it seems the only thing I've missed is you guys worrying about satellite connections(which in this service will only apply to international sites) so I guess I'm not that far behind. On another note it seems like there are some legal issues concerning Sentech's launch in DBN and Cape Town but the launch will still happen in JHB this is good and bad new. Bad becuase we have to wait for the service which according to my service will be availible in Jan or late Dec but most likely Jan 2004. Good News well all you guys are rather scheptic about the service and I haven't tried it myself this way one area will have the service and hopefull they will give us feedback on the speeds and pings and stuff before it's launched to DBN and CT :) Look if worse comes to worse we are no better off than we started so we lost nothing :)

Well from what I heard the launch has been posponed till somewhere in January... Legal strings it seems. Sometime this week i'm guessing we'll find out a bit more in the media and JHB is being launched early next year and DBN shortly afterwards no sure about CT and the rest though. Wait till the end of the week and I'll know more:)

It seem that you have a handle on ISP services in your area. I am looking for "resonable" satellite bi-directional broadband internet access from Nampula Mozambique. Can you point me in the right direcion???

Somehow, I have my doubts about what we see from Sentech.

Seems like political football here:

10 referees & no players.

How can anyone buy tickets for a game like this !

Thank You Solar!
I checked out Sentech. Unfortunately they only service customers within South Africa. I wonder if it would be possible to purchase the equipment from other sources to access the service since the satellite footprint covers Mozambique?????

Thanks again,

I was just wondering why people are getting so hyped up about the Sentech service when we all know that they have high pings. We seemed to be stuck in the past.

OK Dominic, what other options do I have here. Also, will I be subject to high tarrifs and taxes????? Right now my daughter in Nampula is stuck with rather expensive dial-up service. Broad-band service offerred locally is prohibitively expensive. Sentech (from what I can gather) transmits and receives on the standard KU band. The digital informations looks like it is isolated by inbound and outbound antenna filters hooked to a broadband modem. It doesn't seem to be that difficult once you cut through the proprietary red tape.
