Pricing would obviously be key to take-up on this service as geographical userdensity is important in keeping cost down (the more users on a single accesspoint the better)

My guess is that Sentech won't be able to supply the demand at R200 pm - all included - for residential users at 64/64 - at that rate it would be worth my trouble getting my Mom on the system as well to read here email.

At R400 pm for 128/64 for business, I will consider it as a backup for ADSL.

But switchover immediately? No ways! I know the devil I have at present, and won't risk the Sentech one before he has exposed himself properly!
Once a year you will suffer from sun outage for approx 10 minutes regardless of the size of the dish.

What is this about?

Hmmm. Solar flares (radiation from the sun or something) regularly put out satelite communication.

Thing is this *is not* sattelite from what i know (corridor speak ;) ) It uses an RF Yagi antenna, sorta like wifi but propriotary. This means u should have normal latency for local connections.

I like the idea of wireless and it seems if Sentech are using the latest wireless technology it can be a great success but I have to ask as a games, what kind of pings can we expect you think between say DBN and JHB? not internations I understand that it gets rerouted to a satellite but if this becomes PLAYABLE say sub 100 ping to any local site then I am very intrested(having isdn is bothersome with time comstraints)

If it is like i think it is you can probably expect a 10-20ms round trip time (what say u ProAsm?). Only international is taken via satelite.

As soon as I have a test setup I will let you know on the pings.
We estimate around 40 ms from Durban to Jhb or anywhere in the country for that matter.

I setup the link last week but have not received the equipment yet, probably come this week, but using a laptop directly on the line, a DOS ping to IS Jhb was 22 ms.

Well if that is the case 20ms with broad band and high/no cap sounds VERY appealing I also heard something on R1000+/- and if that is the case I'll be the fist very happy person in line:) and I have a few friends who want to first see how it is before desiding but this sounds SOOOO much better than ADSL we can only hope:)

I dont know where the (confusing) satellite thread came into this W-DSL talk.

The satellite link is for Sentech's international link from SA!

Users will connect to base stations (like cell towers) up to 15km....u wont need any satellite dishes!!!

Hi,

Can someone pls carify how the W-DSL will operate. Are there various options that use a Dish and options that dont use a dish? How do they work.

Thankx

Lo all.

I have been doing quite a bit of talkin with Uninet, a local wireless provider. They came around to my house to test for signal, but said that there wasn't enough, and that i would have to wait till they setup another transmitter which could have better signal.

They said the problem was too many trees. And they are using the Antenae wireless system, not satellite dishes.

Would the sentech wireless broadband option be like this, and need line of sight, etc? If not, how will it be different, and is there hope for people who live in "Leafy" suburbs!

Chow, Nick

If you can get TV (not satelite, forget about damn satelites) then u should be able to get sentechs wireless access ;) Remember, sentech already has an extensive VHF/UHF TV network.

I drove around Milnerton(Cape Town) the other day and saw a sentech building with one mother of a dish on the roof.

Lo all.

Hmmm good news about the signal (I can get tv with an aerial), but a bit of a bummer about the roll out. Why tygerberg? Lol!

Well ADSL came to my area quite quickly, and I am sure Sentech won't waste their time either.
