"It is now 2003 and the closest we've come to 3G is some US and European carriers supporting relatively "low” 2.5G speeds of 100kbps provided by technologies such as GPRS (general packet radio service)." IT - Web

We have some of them here all that G3 is as far as I can tell means wireless connections in the 2.4-3ghz range :) this wireless connection is the lower range 2.4ghz technology:) Hence using the same technology as the 3G phones:) If I'm wrong I'm sorry about it but the Subject is Wireless internet and and it is using the 2.4ghz technology(hence no line of sight required within 5km) instead of the same technology as Megawan which used I think 300-900mhz range.(could be wrong)

Ta Cerb, I left the Cell Industry about 3 years ago (Worked for MTN,VODACOM for 6 years) and there was talk about it even back then when BLUETOOTH was the buzz word. I must say it wouldn't surprise me if we had a fully operational 3G service in this Country soon, we do have one of the best Cell phone infrastructures in he world.....

This is a mail I recieved from Sentech.

The Broadband Wireless product set is currently being defined. The expected launch for this product is end November 2003. The product set will contain various options based on the send and receive bandwidth and other parameters and will be offered as both a residential and business offering. It will serve as a wireless local loop thus providing Internet directly to the home/ business user. This means that the end user will not require any Telkom infrastructure to provide Internet connectivity to their desired premises. The product will be rolled out in selective metropolis initially but the coverage of other areas will follow (dependant on density, financial viability and market demand).

Unfortunately this is all that I am able to share right now, but watch for updates on our website for more information closer to the launch of the product.

Pricing has not been confirmed, but entry level should be around R 6/700 per month.

Thanks,
Tracy.

If they would take my order, they would already have it.

Ok, now you've done it! And just as I thought 'yeah-yeah' probably a couple of grand again for some excuse-of-a-service to create a perception of giving Telkom a run for their money.
With an entry level price like that and NO TELKOM infrastructure is used - you definitely have my attention.
I hope we are not disappointed thou.
(Maybe Santa has a nice BIG present for us all [:D])

It's a sad fact that in this Country things that seem to good to be true, usually aren't. I'll adopt the wait and see bicth and moan about TELKOM's ADSL attitude until SENTECH comes up with some hard figures or working sample's. Thing that bothers me is this "R6/700 entry level" statement. When I hear this I immediately think 64k don't ask me why, but R6/700 for ADSL equivalent with no port shaping or 3gig cap for less than TELKOM sounds to good to be true. Sorry to put a damper on things but lets hope I'm wrong......

Just to put things into perspective if you go to their site www.sentech.co.za you'll see the wireless connection(which they are launching) is 128k-2mb now they are starting with the small package so assuming that it's a 128k/128k :) as for the price well as i said earlier I can't comment on that. But I'm excited. :)

[?]wasnt their inital starter 64K? if so 6/700 for a 64k is a little above my fireplace
also if the pricing model follows that then i wouldnt be suprised if they ask 2000k an above for 512k[:(]sadly this is a lot over my fireplace.
when i heard bout sentechs offer i thought they were gonna scale the 512k to adsl prices an work it down but now it doesnt seem that way.
also on a side note if it runs on 802 standards then i wonder if we can actually use a normal wifi network card to link up.(probly not)
if the prices are right though for me pocket then im definetly making a signal booster the first day i get it.(pringles awayyyyyyyyyyyyy)

New service by Telkom broadband speeds up to 5kbps for only R1k a month. heheh

*sighs* okay okay sheesh. Their bottom of the range that will be launched is 128k/128k this is not limited i.e you share an entire box with 50 or 20 users contention ration 20:1 and 50:1 so if there is bandwidth availible your get it so you can go up to I belive 2mb/s same as their satellite. does that sound better?

That does indeed sound better, but at the end of the day we all pulling on straws here. In an ideal world I would like Sentech to offer us this.

1. ADSL 512 Kbps Down,256 Kbps Up
2. No cap
3. No port shapping

Cost including monthly subs R800 p/m

most likely that is the ideal world
but considering reality i have this stinky feeling(could also be the cabbage boiling) that sentech's 512 pricing is gonna be just about the same as the business packages 512 with a little discount seeing as ure residential an all.[:I]

Yeah look I'm getting my ADSL at my new home in a week or two, I can't keep paying R2500 + on my ISDN. But if Sentech can offer me the above I will go with them. I'll even go as far to say if I can get all that I mentioned I'm willing to pay R1000 for such a service!

BTW what would you be willing to pay for a Sentech service similar in speed to the current TELKOM ADSL service, with no Cap or port shaping, what would your limit be ?

Well to tell you the truth for an ADSL connection with 512k D/l and 256Kb Upload 24/7 access and static ip's I'd be willing to go to R1100 IF Sentech could garantee a percentage of the bandwidth and put it in black and white:) So that no matter what time of the day you could expect that amount no matter what.:)
