The guys at sentec supposedly have a list. I assume the coverage should reach you. Give the sentec guys a call and see what they say. Check out there web page and call them.
I don't think Sentech's wireless broadband solution is going to be one aimed at hardcore gamers.

However l33t there equipment is, they are going through satellite, etc. It will have a ping that won't "do it" for the counter-strike type games out there.

Nonsence, the latency will be the same as ISDN or ADSL if not better. Have to wait and see to be sure though depending on the routing scheme.

And did you actualy report this problem? Never heard about that from anyone else.

Hiya all, once again it would would seem that there is confusion between the current VSTAR bi-directional satellite service and the intended BBW to be launched soon.

With the VSTAR solution there ia a latency of between 700m/s and 750m/s

The "high sites" to be used for BBW will have direct connectivity to the hub and therefore latency should be considerably less.

Once again a reply from a "non techie"

Sentech - OFF TO A SHAKY START

http://free.financialmail.co.za/03/1024/technology/atech.htm

Somehow, I have my doubts about what we see from Sentech.

Seems like political football here:

10 referees & no players.

How can anyone buy tickets for a game like this !
Andre you also have to take into account that yes it might take 300ms to get there but the signal has to get back to hence 600+ :) just thought I'd point that out:p

One positive thing that may come from Sentech is that many ADSL subscribers will move to it and lessen the burden on what seems to be an overstressed DSL infrastructure.

Who knows, Telkom may even jack up ADSL if they notice subscribers jumping ship.

Hi All

I Don't think Telkom will very easily lift the cap on adsl...they have a massive amount of corporate clients paying in the region of R3500.00 a month for a 64k diginet connection and it's very clear to me that they are trying to protect that market more than anything else. Just think of how many of those clients they'll loose to adsl [?]

Cheers

Now a clever company would rather let them change to ADSL and give them unlimited access and keep them as clients rather than totally lose them to another company that offers unlimited access. I see a bright light shining at the end of the tunnel and telkom is going to take it, oh yes.....and I hope it hits them hard.

Nocomms, there is no confusion between the 2 packages over here,
I would have to agree with Cerberus on the Latency's, the local sites will have great pings, but to the best of my knowledge, Sentech is a a 1st tier ISP that obtains its bandwidth via Sat link to the UK, hence all international bandwidth will have the latencys discussed above (I'll leave all the calculations to the exact times in ms up to the seeming Newtonian mechanics experts on this site)

Well give me 2 weeks and I'll check the demo out on site for this product and give you guys the feedback I know your all dying for but you gotta be patient with me:)

I'm going on leave from tomorrow and I'll pop in during the week but after I come back I'll find out more about the BBW and "test drive" it.:)

Regards
Cerberus

While on the subject of neighbourhood wireless networking, does anyone know what equipment is needed, and how much it will cost to setup a wireless network with a radius of about 2km, line of sight?

Yeah.. I've done this setup quite recently.. with excellent results.
For a wireless connection you need client side, and Access Point side equipment:

Access Point:
Anyone that supports an external antenna will work (I use the planet WAP-1965). About R1600 for this unit. (Only thing about this unit is that just one of the external antenna sockets work - this is no problem if you want to use it with an external antenna.. as you would only connect one).

Then you need an aerial, I use a 8dB omni-directional antenna. (about R800)
Then you plug this into a ethernet hub or router.

On the Client side:
I use the planet PCI adapters.. with external aerial sockets. From there on I use LMR-400 cable, to connect to a 2.4Ghz LNB, which I then mount on a standard DSTV 60cm dish. Just point in the direction of the omni aerial.. and there you go. (The adapter is about R800 and the Dish and cabling another R800). This setup will let you connect up to 20km line of sight. If you don't need this much, consider buying a flatpanel antenna. (Although the dish will also work fine).

If you need any more help.. mail me @ brand@ananzi.co.za.

Armitage: I'm in the Bellville / Durbanville area and got a nice wireless setup at the moment (aerial is mounted nice and high, with about 5 users sharing a ADSL connection.. works like a dream).

Big up to you Cerberus, you really have helped us in a great way providing all the necessary info, thanks very much [:D], I've been reading this from page 1 - 12 for the last 1-2 hours, very informing...

As for gaming, this setup would suit me perfectly, I always wanted to download a lot, be able to play my counter strike and other shooters online with an excellent ping and have a 24/7 connection (WOOHOO)...

Problem is I ordered ADSL on monday, I can always cancel it but I want a 24/7 connection for the december holidays and I cant wait till Sentech gets rolled out in my area (Cape Town)...

As for the bandwidth thing, you guys said that there will always be 40kb/sec+, that is very good news, one can just hope that they don't take the Telkom attitude and rake in the money and not upgrade their facilities...

The R3000 setup fee is a bit high, but I suppose its acceptable for such a great service like this!!

I am so glad we can now put Telkom out of business, I see Sentech becoming VERY VERY popular, and possibly completely squashing Telkom, I mean come on, you can get an amazing service at such incredibly good prices, time for the businesses to scrap their ridiculous diginet solutions and move onto Satellite! [8D] The future is looking bright, dont turn a good situation into a bad one Sentech, you have the opportunity in the palm of your hands!
