Telkom’s stated that, “Contention ratios are intellectual property and we are not prepared to make it available.”

This statement from Telkom was made despite assurances to the Regulator (ICASA) that these figures would be made public.

How very surprising :D

Sounds positive (except for Telkom). I wonder if people actually pull finger and start working together, could we really have viable, easy access in South Africa one day?

Interesting.. I notice that the more mobile offerings (V3G, MTN and IBurst) don't supply contention ratios...is this due to the nature of their service - i.e. a Tower may end up being more contended than the target? If so, why can Sentech manage? (If in fact this is true...it's been a while since I dealt with Sentech, but I don't remember receiving much in the way of truth from them).

iBurst was open as well: They don't use contention ratios to manage bandwidth. They manage according to needs (or so they claim).

I don't believe contention ratios are the only way of managing user experience. But I do believe it would be beneficial for all if suppliers would be open on how they manage user experience to allow users to mak informed desicions.

At least Telkom's response to contention ratios made me smile this morning :D Idiots.

Edit:

I must say I'm impressed by sentech's openness.

Could someone explain how "Contention ratios are intellectual property" ?
Is Telkom the brainchild of contention ratio's ? Perhaps they should start
claiming royalties for everyone else using contention ratios :)

Aaaaiiiii .........
