Sentech scale-back irritates internet users

Hahaha!

"Hogging more than 50% of the bandwidth" <-- Are they sure they don't have an open proxy again that is getting abused by capped ADSL users like last time?

This is the same old story from Sentech. Wake the hell up guys, bandwidth intensive applications is where it is at. Live audio and video streaming and online gaming... wtf? What is your target market? Nobody?

I've raised this same issue with their marketing manager a few years back. They don't have a CLUE as to what their clients needs are. Good luck in making any kind of money in this day and age with such a k2k product...

Not to mention the cancellations from month-to-month Classic users, which is probably what Sentech intended anyway. Why should they care anyway...they're getting millions from Gov to get them 2010 ready. They are a government organisation and as such will never be in tune with the consumer market.

Sentech needs to take a marketing 101 course. Any product lives or dies by the opinions of the first people who take it up (so called 'early adopters'). In Sentech speak, these are the 'power users'. Pi$$ them off at your peril.

I would have thought that Sentech would have learned by now...

Sentech and its customers have a vastly different opinion of how much is too much.
The crux of the matter that all these highly paid and knowledgable folks like ICASA, the DoC, Thabo, et al fail to comprehend.

instead they give you this in the interests of forging ahead in the digital age,
The Classic packages cost from R649 to R1449 a month on a 24-month contract. The Flexi packages cost from R299 to R2099 a month
Never forget it.

To the people of South Africa the DoC proudly presents SENTECH - WHAT YOUR GOVERNMENT CAN DO FOR YOU.

Now be happy and cough up the dosh for the scraps we dish out.

Great article, really enjoyed this story!

Nice quotes too, always wondered what the real reason was :D

Good bye Craptech

Yes, time has come.

I would not belive I would ever do such thing, but after this last stunt form Craptech, I have applied for ADSL line, self install option.

So enjoy ur flexy pack mr. Casper Cassidy. Id like to see what will you do when Neotel offers a wimax as a whole solution for voice and data.

I heard Sentech bragging how they can support 3Mbps on their technology ... well H(T)elkom does 4 Mbps right this moment, and one can buy bandwith @ more reasonable price than R1 per MB!!

Oh and i guess ill have to find some lame ass to buy off the Sentech modem before they cant sell at all .

So no offenc if you reading this and would like to purchase the Sentech modem for your Flexy expirience PM ur offer.

sentech has gov backing,so yes they don't care too much

sounds very much like some other telecoms company we love hey? :D

Why oh why do these fools offer internet access to people if they are not allowed to use it?

Do only the users of "broadband" in SA know what the service is meant for? Surely the idiots providing these services should expect their clients to make full use of the products they are buying, why the hell else would they buy it if they not going to use it? Ugh I give up...

South African telecoms is run, managed and regulated by idiots. Add into that a government that is packed with idiots and you get the end result we see today. Expect positive change when we get a new government...

Massive cost increase

The first I heard was when someone representing Sentech to say they were migrating classic customers and the option they were giving me was the one gig package at R449 and R1/Mb thereafter. Given that I pay a flat R500 pm for up to 10Gb, that I usually use a max of 3 Gb which will be about 6-8Gb this month, that's no deal whatsoever. The explanation for migrating was why pay for the bandwidth that others are using?

After some probing on my behalf she reluctantly admitted that I will be cut-off at the end of October unless I "migrate". Needless to say I have received nothing in writing either by post or e-mail - just this call. I told her I would examine my options and "think about it", but go with the kind of service that provides me reasonable service at a reasonable cost. The Sentech "offering" will see my bandwidth costs more than double, so I don't think I will stick with them.

After all the money Sentech has spent on rolling out a national infrastructure, I would think the best business thing to do would be to cut costs and attract more customers to amortise that expense - not increase the cost of the service and thereby reduce customer numbers. C'est la vie Sentech.

Sentech decided on a whim to offer Internet access. They have made huge mistakes and seemingly NEVER learn from these. Add to all this the huge political infighting in Sentech, and you have a recipe for disaster.

IMHO, Sentech is a vehicle for making politicians and their buddies rich. It's all about the money.

Caustic comments abound on MyADSL, a website for high-speed internet users. “I just got shafted for using what I’m paying for,” said one subscriber.

Hey, i just got quoted :D

Another said Sentech really meant: “We are too incompetent to live up to our promises so we have to get rid of people who use our bandwidth for what it is supposed to do. By getting rid of savvy internet users, we can make space for more ignorant people who think our Flexi packages are value for money, while not having to invest one cent in the upgrade of our infrastructure.”

i got quoted twice :D

You're in for a long wait then
