Season 2 of Wayward Pines is happening.
The somewhat surprisingly solid and consistent ratings performance by Wayward Pines did not go unnoticed, with the network starting discussions back in June about a second season. Because of the long time frame between the project’s pickup/production and its airdate, the options on all actors had lapsed long ago. (Wayward Pines’ Season 1 cast included Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino and Melissa Leo.) The idea was to explore a potential second installment with different characters and cast but in the same world, which would not be a straight anthology format.
Fox has renewed hit psychological thriller Wayward Pines for a second season, it was announced today by David Madden, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. From M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, The Visit) and based on Blake Crouch's international best-selling series of books, 10 all-new episodes of the suspenseful drama are set to air in Summer 2016. The second season will pick up in the wake of Season 1 ....
Here's what David Madden had to say in a statement about the renewal.
"Wayward Pines was a huge hit for us this past summer. We were absolutely blown away by the mysterious and surprising world that Night and his team created, and the twisting-and-turning storytelling that drew viewers in from day one. Season 2 is going to take the suspense, the vision of the future and the haunting character drama to whole new levels, and we can't wait for our fans to continue that ride next year."
Season 1 of Wayward Pines ranked as Summer 2015's No. 1 broadcast scripted TV series among Adults 18-49, averaging a 2.2/8 in the key demo. The series - about a Secret Service agent on a mission to find two missing federal agents in a sleepy Northwest town, and the shocking results of his investigation - ranked among Summer 2015's Top 10 broadcast programs overall among Adults 18-49. The series earned a multi-platform average audience of 9.4 million, which represents a +145% increase versus its Live+Same Day audience - the largest multi-platform lift versus Live+Same Day ever for a Fox drama.
The first season starred Matt Dillon, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Reed Diamond, Reed Diamond, Charlie Tahan, Melissa Leo, Terrence Howard, Tim Griffin and Juliette Lewis. None of these cast members have been confirmed to return for Season 2 quite yet, and it isn't known when production will get under way.

The internet is confused and mildly raging at this year's Golden Globes categorisation of The Martian as a comedy. The film picked up three nominations: Best Director (Ridley Scott), Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy (Matt Damon), and Best Motion Picture, Comedy.
