Well that's Serendipitous. I just finished rewatching Rome last night and thought hey, I'm still in the mood for watching something I loved first time round and have forgotten enough to enjoy again, so I started Deadwood :p

Come here and all this discussion going on, I think all y'all picked up my positive vibes.

Deadwood was/is pure genius. I've watched it 4 times...

Unfortunately it has set the bar TO high for me and nothing will ever come close again.

Godless came very close indeed, but fluff like Hell on Wheels and Longmire never did it for me.

I tried an episode of Black Summer and ended up watching 3 of them. It's very different - no real narrative (or at least the narrative is not focal), no character backgrounds, little to no exposition in general. It's structured like a series of vignettes set during the early weeks of a zombie apocalypse. Also people who the story focuses on for a bit sometimes die unexpectedly - very cool.

It's surprisingly good but I'm not sure it will succeed with people who like traditional storytelling.

You have to watch it more than once. It makes more sense. The dialogue can a bit confusing to follow at times, especially when it came to things like statehood and the courting of "unaffiliated" communities. You have to have a bit of knowledge about how a state was incorporated back then.
