Binging on The Alienist . . . awesome!

Couldn't quite put my finger on but I did some digging (something felt very familiar with this series).

Wow! Penned by none other than Cary Joji Fukunaga who incidentally directed and produced the first season of HBOs True Detective.

Co-wrote one or two episodes before leaving early on in production to work on a new series for Netflix...I was disappointed and put this on the back-burner for that reason. He was supposed to direct also so not sure what happened there. Also left IT over budget arguments.

He's the new Guillermo del Toro :whistling:

I see The Terror up to episode 5 is out.

Watched the first 2 and it's been fine mostly...a little over-dramatic and over-stretched at times. Not sure if it's me but a lot of "prestige" television nowadays seems to come across like they've just slowed everything down and put more silence into the show. Kinda gets on my nerves a bit.

When you are testing with subtitles some movies seem to have hardly any speech at all !

The Wire - done and dusted. Undoubtedly one of the best shows to grace the small screen.

Don't think there's been any show filled with so many memorable characters.

If must watch tv shows were food we would all be anorexic right now, so I looked up lists of most watched/best/greatest tv shows of all time.

http://www.thisisinsider.com/best-tv-shows-of-all-time-2017-11#breaking-bad-amc-20
https://www.ranker.com/crowdranked-list/greatest-tv-shows-of-all-time
https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/best-tv-shows-ever/ ( my preferred list )
https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/lists/100-greatest-tv-shows-of-all-time-w439520/breaking-bad-w439638

Some interesting results...

Game of Thrones is consistent in the top 10 as are The Sopranos and The Wire.

Fargo, Deadwood, X-Files are regular listings while Breaking Bad seems on average the highest rated.

Unless I missed it Westworld doesn't feature ?

The Leftovers ? Any good ?

In short, apart from GOT most of the highest rated have ended, many ended a good many years ago.

Is there anything coming to top the front-runners or are we in a period of mediocrity?

I loved the Leftovers... but if you are someone that likes closure, don't watch this.

We may well be in a period of period of mediocrity, but it takes a few seasons for a show to gain a following and to make it onto a greatest TV shows list. Which is why some good current shows like Westworld have not yet made it onto these lists.

With the glut of new TV shows, networks are quick to cancel shows at the first sign of faltering ratings, which means most shows do not get the chance to make it past a couple of seasons.

Any list that fails to include The Twilight Zone or MST3K gets ignored immediately by me.

For a run-on period we had The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm etc.

I wouldn't say we're in a period of mediocrity per se, but pretty much everything that follows those giants of the small screen are going to seem mediocre in comparison.
