Question -

I'm noticing that HD ' files' are getting smaller and smaller.

720p movies are coming in below 1.5GB - how are they achieving this compression with seemingly no lack of quality ?

It all depends on how they are encoded. 720p movies below 1.5GB are going to be shyte imo.

False. Last night I watched the YIFY 720p version of Captain Phillips movie whose size is around 900mb but I had nothing to complain about the video quality while watching this epic movie :p

Perhaps you missed the part where I said "in my opinion." Anyway those releases are fine if you want a quick download but I find them full of pixelation artifacts and fast moving scenes look like total crap. 900MB is simply not enough for a quality h264 encode of a movie at 720p, it is just physically impossible.

Decent brrip for 720p is around 2.5gb to 3.5gb. Blue ray 720p is anything from 4.5gb. to 8.5gb

Have a look at the audio quality, then you'll see where the real cuts have been made.

I agree. Also depends what size screen/TV you're watching it on.

Spot on. I find those sub 1.5GB rips are fine on smaller screens but anything over 40 inches and you start seeing defects in video quality. As has already been mentioned, audio quality also takes a hit.

Just download your stuff overnight like a proper pirate

Another spot on.
General viewing stuff I don't mind the small HD files as they are watched on the bedroom, bar or lounge TV (42/42/47). I don't have decent sound systems in these rooms so don't mind the lack of high quality sound. Most series I have set for SD as I also find that fine for general viewing.

Now the good stuff (movies and shows), that has to be high quality with the full surround sound track etc.. We watch these on a 120" 1080p screen with Marantz sound, and anything less than perfect destroys the experience.

Yet, I know of people that are happy with standard SD no matter what.

House Of Cards Season 1 finished.

Very good series. Kevin Spacey is brilliant as always.

LOL.

Well now I have a list of Season 2's to look forward to. All of them relatively new shows.

Hannibal, Bates Motel, Vikings, Masters of Sex, House of Cards

Banshee, now there is a show that I do not like - at all. I would love to get hold of the main actor and ride him to a point as to where he would pump about half a liter of cum into me.... :)

This is Banshee not Sea Biscuit.
