Set N70 to only use 3G

Hi

Does anyone know how to force the Nokia N70 to only use 3G? I have asked before, but unfortunately no one knew. So, before buying a N70, decide if you will be happy with letting the phone decide that it shoudl switch to GPRS at random. I hardly ever connect to the Net with 3G, it always switch over to GPRS after a few seconds.

Help anyone, apart from that, it's a brilliant phone.

I see on this website ( http://www.mobique.com/nokia/n70/page4.php ) the following:
"The N70 is a dual-mode GSM/UMTS handset that can operate in a 2G- or 3G-only, or combined network environment. In GSM/2G mode, it supports GPRS and EDGE based data connections, and WCDMA in UMTS/3G mode."

Is there such a setting under network settings perhaps?

I had the same problem with my 6680 and then downloaded NetMonitor (Field Test). One of the options will allow you to 'Force Protocol' to 3G, thereafter the phone reboots and remains in 3G mode. I used this quite a bit for video calling. Not sure if there is a NetMonitor application for the N70 though.

Not for N70, this is the big problem with most 3G phones.
I wonder if the (possible) settings I posted above for the N70 isn't with a newer firmware version?

Yes, I tried installing Net monitor, it doesn't work on the N70. So is there new firmware available, and what has changed?

This is annoying for these phones, if you can't set it. I have hardly ever been able to use 3G on the phone, and I live in Cape Town.

seems only Nokia does not have the option as default I have the 6680 and have to use netmonitor but the Motorola V3X and ericssons have a option in the network setting to lock wcdma. IMO Nokia have made a huge oversight in an otherwise brilliant range of 3G phones.

The N90 has the option of selecting 3G but all phones prior to it did not.

So Nokia release some new firmware for ur 3G phones making it an option if u can do it in ur N90 it cant be that hard to include it in a updated firmware ver for the rest its symbian after all. V3G maybe u can find out for if nokia is working on it or get vodafone to request it from them ?

Do you have the model numbers perhaps, Gunny? A friend of mine is looking for a 3G phone but he does not necessarily want to get the 6680. He does want to lock to 3G though.

Motorola V3X does it altho the nokia has a better antenna the nokias signal is always stronger comparing the phones. The motorola V3X also feels like a toy, the battery cover feels lose and the phone creaks while holding it tight. The plastic covers also scratch easily while the nokia 6680 and N70 are solid phones (btw i got 2 V3X's and they both suffer the same probs). I played with a W900i and it looks really good solid to I just dnt like the way it folds and open it is a big bulky phone. If u looking for a nice 3G phone my vote is for the 6680 using netmon to lock it to 3G it really is a kick ass 3G modem.

H4voQ, do you mean 60 kiloBytes?

Do you have some free account? 26 Gigs? That is 26*R500=R13000???

If you (ab)using vlive, just remember that you may be (contributing towards) slowing down the network for other paying users.

If you haven't made any heroic attempts to bypass billing, I suppose it's VC's problem then. I had a similar situation last week on a competitor's network where they didn't charge me for a day. It was quite fun :)
