Setting Ubuntu to download on local repositories

I've just installed 10.04 and I tried to download Klibido via the software center. Saw it was trying to download via US servers so I changed it to local (sun servers). Now it still doesn't download the app. Bear in mind I am on local only bandwidth.

Can someone please help a noob!?

Well, there are many ways to change the sources. And I see that you chose the easiest way. Did you update (reload) the lists after you changed the source.

However you can follow the following steps if you want to change to local:
1. Open the terminal and copy and paste in the following:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
It will then ask you your password, which is normal, to access the sources file.
After you input your password, gedit ("notepad") will open with the list.

Then can you maybe copy and paste the list here in a reply inside the CODE brackets.

2. However, if you are daring, then you can overwrite your sources list with the following:
Code:
#deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx_ - Release i386 (20100429)]/ lucid main restricted
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
# newer versions of the distribution.

deb-src http://za.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted

## distribution.

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security multiverse

After you overwrite it, just save it and close gedit.
3. Then type in the terminal the following:
Code:
sudo apt-get update

Please note: I am not using ubuntu at the moment, however this can mess up your sources (highly unlikely). Also make a backup of your sources.list.
Worst that can happen: Well nothing really, it just won't connect.

Seeing as the title of this thread it suited for repositories, I think experienced users will like this site:
http://repogen.simplylinux.ch/
It lets you generate Sources.list for any Ubuntu release and lets you choose the country and add 3rd party repositories.

You can also get to the Software Sources through Synaptic:

System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager

Enter your password when requested.
Go to Settings>Repositories and select server from South Africa (the install program should have done this automatically).

While you're in this dialog, make sure nothing is selected in the Other software tab (unless you have installed something which has its own repository, such as Google Chrome). You can also check the Updates tab and set the automatic updates to whatever you want.

Close the dialog, and click on the reload button on the top left in Synaptic.

Once this is complete, you can try and download the package you're after from within Synaptic.

Whoop whoop!!! Success! Thank you.
After I did this all it gave me the following in the terminal

Does Ubuntu always check for updates on all software automatically? If so, can one turn it off and set it to manual?

also look into APT-MIRROR.
It makes a local copy of the repository, so if you have a lot of linux pc's you apt-mirror to get the repository, then the local pc's get the files from there.

Read my post again.

This is only a good idea if you update your mirror disk regularly.
