getting XP computers to see Windows 7 is a serious pain! You can follow that guide posted above... but if it does not make sense, just rest in the fact that the rest of us are just as P'd off at trying to get it to work.

I see...

Thanks

Seems like MSFT evil plan to move everyone to 7... They could have released an update/hotfix for XP like they did when they wanted XP computers to appear on the network map in Vista.

How to connect to xp machines

Make sure that all of your pc's are on the same workgroup

if your xp machine don't have password create one, win7 won't connect to a unsecured pc, once your password are setup and your drives are shared go to your windows 7 pc press windows key + R then type in the run box \\192.168.1.1 replace the ip address with the pc's address you are trying to access

win7 will then bring up a login prompt type your username & password and then a window will open with all the shared drives of that pc, right click on a drive and click map network drive to place a shortcut in your my computer window.

hope this helps.

if you can't connect make sure to try and ping the other pc
press windows key + R type CMD press enter

In the window that opens type ping ip 192.168.1.1 replace the ip with the pc yu are trying to access

Rubbish. I've used Windows 7 to connect to plenty of open XP machines. The problem is not seeing the XP machines from Windows 7 (that is as easy as clicking on "Network"). Windows 7 can see XP machines that are even on a different workgroup. The problem is the other way around. Getting the XP machines to see Windows 7. Therein lies the difficulty.

It really helps when all the computers in the house are running Windows 7. Homegroup is just about the best networking feature I've seen in Windows.

yeah same here... i do it every day... win7 / xp no problem at all...

i think the main prob is... just put ur win7 into a home group... xp users dont have to join(they cant, not that im sure)...

and ur usual network setting on xp and viola it works
