Just acquired my ADSL from Telkom and I am having difficulty setting up my email account - I can send mail but not recieve - error message as follows:

The server responded with an error. Account: 'pop3.telkomsa.net', Server: 'pop3.telkomsa.net', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR AVG POP3 Proxy Server: Cannot connect to the mail server!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90

?

My hardware: Standard P4 with Win XP Pro using a Planet ADE3100 ADSL modem router. Using Outlook express which came with Windows XP

Check your mail username and password and if you're using a firewall other than the XP firewall, check outlooks access permissions.

If your details are correct, change email clients ;)
http://www.domainscape.co.uk/technical_faq/outlookexpress_errormessages.htm

"Message cannot be downloaded from server due to known bug in Outlook Express (any Non Microsoft email package will retrieve message) "

You could also try rebooting.

ADSL_virgin, Telkom have a terrible track record regarding their email stability - big time.

My only advise to you is to NOT use your supplied ADSL email address for this reason.

I know it sounds crazy, but trust me on this - I'm sure anyone else reading this thread who has had experience with Telkoms email will back me up.

Get an alternative email, even if it costs you an extra R20 a month - you'll be happier in the long run.

Rebooted - checked permissions - same error - can still send but not recieve - not understanding how that works but anyway?!

adslvirgin, Looks like you are using AVG. You might want to disable it for a while and see if that helps.

Also, open a Command Prompt (on Windows XP, Start / Run ... / cmd) and execute "telnet pop3.telkomsa.net 110". You should get a response back from the POP3 server that starts with +OK. If not, you should be looking at things like a the personal firewall or dig deeper.

Looks to me like the server is down.

C:\>telnet pop3.telkomsa.net 110
Connecting To pop3.telkomsa.net:110...Could not open connection to the host, on
port 23: Connect failed.

<EDIT - oops - remove the : - thanks AYCE>

Or - Teklom have denied me access. Phone ADSL support - 0800 DSL DSL. If you've got the time. Otherwise - do you want a gmail account instead. It'll last forever, even when you switch service providers.

Does your AVG have full access to the internet? Again, check the firewall settings

Trust me here people - Telkom email is NOT stable.

I've encountered nothing but complaints from ADSL users that have Telkomsa.net email addresses - it works great for a few weeks, then has countless issues - rinse and repeat.

Will try alternate mail client - any you guys suggest?

If your really serious about your business email, get your own domain with a hosting company that offers good email services. You can get setup for as little as R300 and pay R20 a month.

I cannot recommend that enough if your email is very important to you.

If it's not for business, get a gmail account.

I've got gmail invites if you want one. Otherwise, for the hosting option, check out www.hetzner.co.za. Keep in mind that a .co.za domain will cost you R150 for the first year and then R50 per year thereafter.

You could also try webmail.telkomsa.net and use that while you cant access pop3 mail normally

If it is a new email account, my suggestion is too dump it and get a gmail address if it's for personal use.

Please phone Telkom and have your mail-account setup and freed. Otherwise it does not work. I had the same problem during my first setup.
