Hi, I got a E220 modem (USB), installed the 32K (didn't have 64) sim card, it eventually picked up (on auto) the Vodacom network 24 hrs later, and is receiving sms without problems. Signal strength indication ranges from 3 to 5 bars, depending on where I am in the house. However, I do periodically get a total disconnect (No Network). This is in Sunnyridge, just south-east of Bedfordview. The coverage map in my area shows no 3G, but tests with a datacard before I got the E220 showed generally good (up to more than 1.4 Mbps) data transfer rates on occasion.

OK, so the problem: using the default Vodacom connection (APN: internet, authentication number: *99***1#, no user id or password), the connection fails. It starts transmitting the packet, then says: A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed.

I only have the normal Windows firewall installed.

Does anyone have an idea what's going on? I checked out the huawei web site, Vodacom, Google, this forum... next step is the 155, but - I understand I must set some time aside for such a big venture ;-)

enjoy, and best regards
Pieter

You need to approach this in a logical way:

1) Signal strength: What level are you getting?
2) Is your SIM set up to access the Vodacom data network?
3) Which APN?
4) Can you connect with this setup anywhere else?

Do these first.

Hi vodacom3g, thanks, I phoned the help desk, they answered in 10 seconds, and told me I was a wee bit too eager, the connection was still being activated on the network since it was only 24 hrs after the application. We relaxed a bit, watched a movie, and about 6 hrs later, the authentication went through when I tried to connect. Connected at a reported 3.6 Mbps ( I wish ;-) ), checked it with a speed test and it came to 1.3 Mbps.

So everything's fine now.

Thanks and best regards

Another satisfied customer - thanks to V3g and Vodacom. Always good to hear about the positive experiences rather than only the negative ones.
