Hi,
I ordered ADSL and internet service from Telkom. I have an ADSL X5 modem that I got from the US. The SAIX tech support said they can't help me out with it. They did give me the setting VPI=8 and VCI=35 encapsulation=llc protocol=PPPoE Authentication=CHAP. But when I enter these (and my username and password) in my modems setup, it still doesn't connect. The 'Link' light on the modem keeps flashing red, which means it doesn't see the ADSL connection (its supposed to change to a solid green if it does).
Can someone point me in the right direction? Other settings to change? Will this modem work at all? I heard people saying something about Telkom coming out to check the line - no one came to my house - are they supposed to? They just called and said the line was set up. Also, I read on another post about Telkom giving out incorrect usernames. I try the suggestion and see if that helps. You can post here or email me at lionchow2@yahoo.com.

Thanks,
Jason

Oh yeah - I am running Windows XP - I can connect to the modem via USB or Ethernet - if one is better, let me know - right now I have it connected through ethernet.

Thanks,
Jason

OK - I called Telkom and yes I do need someone to come out and do the installation first. Of course it would have been nice if the person that left the message that said 'your line is activated' or the two people I spoke to at Telkom after that would have told me that. [:(!] If I am still having problems after the techie comes out I will repost.

Thanks,
Jason

The Telkom tech came out to my house today and setup the line. He was really friendly and helpful. The Zoom X5 modem I am using works fine. I just had to enter the info that is listed in the first post above and it connected with no problems. Also, the Telkom people on the phone are still giving out incorrect usernames - if they give you one like this:
telkomdsl12345@telkomsa.net
it should actually be:
telkomdsl12345@dsl512telkomsa.net
