Several injured in gas explosion at Rivonia shopping complex

At least eight people were injured and nine shops damaged during a gas explosion at a Rivonia shopping centre in Sandton on Saturday, emergency services officials said.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Nana Radebe confirmed the incident, saying the injured people had burn wounds that ranged from critical to serious. They have been hospitalised.

The exact number of injured people couldn't be confirmed.

As flames billowed out of a Rivonia restaurant in Sandton, several people were treated for injuries, while staff dashed into the building to evacuate co-workers.

The fire began after the kitchen of the Istanbul Kebab & Shawarma restaurant reportedly experienced a gas explosion. The exact cause of the explosion is under investigation.

The incident took place just after lunch time on Saturday, with emergency services called to the scene at the shopping centre on Rivonia Boulevard in Sandton just before 14:00.

Family devastated after gas explosion razed Rivonia restaurant and several shops

The family who own the Johannesburg restaurant which burnt to the ground on Saturday, taking several shops with it, are devastated that their livelihood is gone.


The Istanbul Kebab & Shawarma restaurant, opposite the Rivonia Boulevard shopping centre, suffered a gas explosion in the early afternoon after a gas line allegedly detached in the kitchen.


Seven people were injured, two critically after a fire broke out as a result of the explosion. According to a business owner on the scene, the fire also razed the next door bottle store, two hairdressing shops, a barber shop and a locksmith.
