(CNN) -- An Alaska lottery held to raise money for a group that helps sexual abuse victims had a surprise winner: a convicted sex offender.

Alec Ahsoak, who according to the state sex offender registry was convicted in 1993 and 2000 for sexual abuse of a minor, came forward Saturday with the winning ticket for the $500,000 Lucky Time Pull Tabs jackpot.

How screwed up is that?

Surely it's pretty clear that the two events are unrelated.

The universe does not always mete out justice at the time and in the way we would like it to.

IIRC a sex offender in the U.K also won a lottery

Did he serve time in prison? Well then he repaid the debt to society.

Not IMO. Convicted criminals should be exempt from lotteries just like voting.

Lotteries, especially where set up by the state is seen as way to improve lives of citizens via aid packages or directly with lucky winners. Having a criminal win kinda undermines it albeit not as much for non-serious offenders

Why should they have a large some of money dropped into their lap at the expense of law abiding citizens.

Lotteries, especially where set up by the state is seen as way to improve lives of citizens via aid packages or directly with lucky winners. Having a criminal win kinda undermines it albeit not as much for non-serious offenders

Lottery players on the whole are net losers, far less is paid out than is paid in so criminals and citizens in general are likely to lose rather than win. Would you also ban criminals from casinos?

Well I don't like lotteries on a whole and think of it as a scam + waste of money to be honest. To answer your question, although majority of players will be losers(uhm in terms of wining) it seems wrong that a criminal wins where money won is basically from a majority law abiding citizens.. and again contradicts the whole upliftment angle that's usually pushed to justify lotteries.
