Hi,
Is it necessary for us to use the file vault these days with the new regime of capping?
I myself dont think so.
We are being screwed over for bandwidth and in my own little way I will no longer use the vault, and download all my stuff from overseas servers making sure that (as best I can) that its international bandwidth.
The file vault does plenty gigs a day according to the site itself so might as well make them international gigs and not play into telkoms grubby hands.
Its futile and childish I know, but it makes me feel better about the money I spend on my adsl account.

The file vault may as well move overseas cos with hard capping and local bandwidth costing at least R70/GB, whats the point of having them locally unless one gets an IS account with a larger local cap.

LOL - how's that - you can't use Telkom to make use of their own service so you have to use IS. LOL at Telkom.

I use international bandwidth for EVERYTHING I possibly can purely out of spite. Even if I was garuanteed 64Kb/s I would still go international.

um .. filevault = local = quicker downloads...

Not Using Filevault = international = same speed downloads(for me atleast) and = Telkom loses a little money.

If you download from the filevault you save Telkom some money... nice going.

um .. never said it was faster or slower or anything, like I said in my original post, it might be futile and childish I agree, but it makes me feel better when I pay the bill. Thats all.
What will also start to happen now is folks/companies that are getting sqweezed for cash now will start hosting their webby's overseas, no point in paying hundreds or thousands of rand for buggerall.
There is zero benefit to hosting in SA anymore.
Local is definately not lekker anymore.

erm, local has never been lekker :P local cars are expensive, banking is expensive, telephony is expensive (cell and landline) and internet is a joke.

local is lekker? i guess i should become a masochist

Yep, actually I'd make a point of downloading from File Vault. The services is free and by not using it Telkom loses nothing.

But the more you use it, the more wear and tear on the server which will cost them in the end :p

/me agree's with sneeky.
There is no incentive to host locally or download locally or provide local services, so, don't doit. Don't create new opportunities, don't help grow the local internet, don't strengthen South Africa's place on the Internet.

Who's to blame for this ? One guess.

Cutting off the nose to spite the face.....................
Not at all Obelix

I can get the same patches , game movies and general paraphernalia from overseas servers for free and in most cases at very similar speeds.
Even if it takes a few minutes longer, i do have a 24/7 connection, the only part of the ADSL advertising that is actually true, go figure.

As for web services try and price something like PowWeb's service in SA
http://powweb.com/PowWeb/OnePlan/Detail
You would have to sell your car and house, and probably also have to become a major drug dealer to be able to afford it, or a Telkom exec, either.
Definately not cutting off anything, its purely economic m8.
