Most of my client have asked me to block Facebook in addition to the suite of website we already block (youtube, google video, myspace)

why? not so much employee time wasting, but bandwidth. at R90 per GB, Facebook with all it's pictures at one client (20 employees) took over 3GB of traffic in June (only about 4 people were using it).

Personally I see no benefit to the site for work purposes.

If Telkom did not make bandwidth so exorbitantly expensive, that we would only block facebook during office hours.

Blocking it for bandwidth reasons in SA I can understand but blocking it for "productivity" reasons seems narrow-minded.

One thing that we are seeing now, is that the employees are using their cellphones to access facebook. That would cost a pretty penny.

luckly non of my clients issue cellphones to their employees, they give them an "allowance"

if you pay your employees business cellphones, have your phone provider block those sites too. at R2 a MB, the cost could be substantional

Why is FB getting so much publicity on this site, there seem to be so many articles of late on it.

I got "addicted" to it last month but now I am bored with it. You find yourself doing pointless stuff on it after a while like the stupid zombie nonsense...

Blocking it is a good thing because business is about making money and not having staff fooling around with their friends.
I see FB the same as inviting your buddies over during work time to the office, and fooling around with them.

Besides you can access FB from your mobile anyway so why are people stressing. If people want to upload pics etc that should be saved for after hours.

Just browsing our ISA Server logs, Facebook is in the top 10 of sites, 2GB for July.

Not as much as News24 though, 16GB for July!

On a related note, here's a mail my company sent out:

To All Employees
Please be advised that any participation in the facebook site (www.facebook.com) is a waste of company resources. Any usage deemed as inappropriate and not aligned with the intent of our policies will be subjected to disciplinary hearings.

All company owned computer resources and other communication assets should be utilised for business purpose only. Directive B-109 does allow for limited personal use in cases like calls/emails to home, doctor, school, etc. or internet access for information on news, weather, maps, medical aid, etc.

All electronic data stored on company resources is the property of the company and personnel should not expect privacy in their use of company resources.

The Company reserves the right to conduct inspections or audits of its computer resources and similar assets and to monitor or access the contents of e-mail, internet logs and all other electronic communications and files to identify non-compliance with Company Policies.

Personal use of company resources must be incidental to the individual's work day, be of reasonable duration and frequency, and must not interfere or affect the person's job performance.

Time to use a transparent proxy to cache all those websites don't you think. I reckon it will shave 12GB off your News24 usage alone.

Nope. No friends, and I don't see why others should have friends.

I prefer my networking without the social, thanks. :)

Talk about BOFHs...short man syndrome, all of you? :D

Of course, the real question then is all the sysadmin's here who have blocked it - does that block apply to you as well? ;)

This narrow-minded thinking is a bit too prevalent for my liking.

The problem is all the banners and external links on that website.

Considering that I've just added my boss as a mate on FB, I'm going to go with...no. :D

IT dictatorships are no different to political ones...blocking free will causes rebellion. ;)

Dont rate facebook as anything special... I was at a company that blocked ANY good site..

www.pnet.co.za, soccer.co.za wheels24 news24 iol.co.za youtube googeImages

All the sites listed in the top 10 were banned..... the IT dept didnt have the brains to figure out that even if there was only 1 person on the net, there will STILL be a top 10 listing.

Go figure.... SA corporates love the power trip and cracking the whips on the slaves.
