I wanted to share my interent with my neighbours but im not sure how to go about it. LAN cable sisn;t an option, and want to use a strong wifi router, perhaps with a omni on the on hte balcony so more people can see and connect.

Whats the best setup? Are there lisence fees if its for free, on the 2.4Ghz range? Any suggestions on hardware and suppliers too would be appreciated.

Does this mean I can connect to your internet for free?

Your ISP would probably have an issue with this.

Most modern routers will have a "Guest Mode" which allows for a second SSID to be broadcast and then only allows for Internet access and no access to your local network.

Depending on how far away they are you might not even need any extra hardware.

Another option would be introducing a Mikrotik with external antenna into your existing network and just adding a Hotspot with a different subnet for them to use, but this is a lot more complex.

What is the main reason?

I want to play aroud with some custom firmware like openWRT and the neighbours are willing to try it out, now just want to implement it.

Its no fun playing with yourself...

Why? If you are on an Uncapped account it's your to do with as you please. You bought an internet connection from them, your home network is your problem.

Setup one of these recently for a friend who wanted to share his internet with a tenant on his property.

Think it was the 3700, I just recall it had both 2.4ghz and 5ghz simultaneously and the Guess Access system.

Not sure if it allows for fitment of an external antenna if you need that though.

Thanks for a useful reply! Im all for the mikrotek! Cost, supplier, firmware suggestions?

Im not really concerned about the softcap even, we'll all just make sure we use less than 10Gb in 7 days, (As an example using the WA fair usuage policy). Or we buy more bandwidth... no big deal.

Thanks SauRoNZA, your replies are faster than mine.

I live in an aprtment block, so there are atlest 20-30 devices that could make use of the interent (between laptops, tablets, mobiles, even iPods) How many connections can a mikrotek handle? I think a good antena on the balcony is important. I also considered (but am clueles on implementation) using a single direction antenna pointing to a deflector on the ground floor, reflecting back to the apartments.

That wug kit looks like it would need the next door guy to get some extra hardware himself. Could I program one of these http://www.miro.co.za/detail.aspx?p...idge / CPE&spp=Wireless User Group (WUG) Kits sit it on the balcony and everyone could connect?

I understand that, but for the moment I'm more interested of the technicaility of the network.

I'll look into legality a little later.

Are you charging them money for it? That would be against your ISP's terms and conditions and I know already that it's against ICASA's regulations.

If you want to share with another household you should get a business account.

I also love playing with wireless stuffs! My current setup is a old ubiquiti bullet2 omni bridged into a Mikrotik RB750 giving out DHCP with internet and wug and no security at all.

It is awesome to see how many IPs you lease to people thinking they are clever and getting free internet. In the three years I have this setup going, there was only one neighbour that told me that his son is able to use my internet. I know of two other neighbours that is actively using my internet an then there are about 4 Blackberries and the odd IPhone.

I once sniffed someones packets and got his MSN account added him and told him about CTWUG and he joined the network for a while.

If you put up an open AP people will connect ;)

Mikrotik ftw.

Whether your ISP is happy or not, you would remain responsible for any breaches of AUP. So one of your users does something naughty, you are liable.

yes, and you can see it. If you pick up an open ap giving away free internet, you are going to abuse it. Unless you setup some serious queuing and firewall rules to only allow certain ports.

In my case a simple quee for 128kbps down and 64kbps up on the entire interface. Everyone connecting to the open AP shares 128kbps ;)
