Sharing an MTN 3G data card on a LAN

Hi there

I am looking for alternatives to connect my wife and myself to the Internet.

Is there a router available with which I can share the MTN data card via my home LAN? I don't want to share it via Internet Connection Sharing.

Do you have the PCI card? The Linksys router that Vodacom offer might be an option, if (as I suspect) the MTN card is the same under paint as the Voda one.

Or the USB modem? For that, I'd get interested in the linux drivers that some of the threads here have been about ... and hook it into a smoothie! ... You do use Smoothwall at home don't you? :D

Yup, I do want to hook it up to a Smoothie. Smoothie FTW!

USB is out for me, don't want any USB issues under Linux. We, at the Smoothwall Community Forum, tend to call it UnSuitaBle for the correct reason... :)

Besides, Ethernet is more stable, and will work with any OS in a pinch. I don't want to mess around with USB drivers for Linux should I want to test a different Linux firewall distro, don't have the time to waste. ;) :)

So I'll have to look at said Linksys router then... :)

MTN also do a router called the Option Globe Surfer (3G/ HSDPA WLAN/LAN) They give a price of R329pm x 24 plus a sim & stupid connection fee (bloodsuckers:eek: )

MTN offer a Option router otherwise known as the Globesurfer

Quite a nice router but the Linksys is probably a better option because you can probably use the E660 which is 7.2 compatible. MTN are also looking into offering the Linksys shortly

OK, to the serious stuff.* Do you have a link for the globesurfer option? And is the figure of R329pm x 24 right, and what's it for - just the router, or some bandwidth too?

Thinking more, USB vs Ethernet is not a true comparison. USB connects direct to a device, but Ethernet connects to another IP host (another router, iow).

A 3G router is a hardware router with the 3G modem in it, not so?

Since you want the firewall to be a smoothie, you don't want fancy features in the 3G router.

So ... if you can make a USB 3G modem work on linux at all, why not that in another generic box (which you then never touch) and hook that via ethernet into the smoothie?

Why not get a PCMCIA to PCI converter, stick the data card in that and plug it directly into the smoothwall box?

K I'm not to clued up with LX but there is other options.

You can make your PC the host sort of like a server that is connected to the net. The other PC's connected to you will be able to share the connection and surf different sites ect. :confused:

I use the Linksys router with my E620 card and it work pretty good.

I enjoy the wireless, as I can sit anywhere and get connected, my wife allso uses her notebook alot.

I would get 2 ethernet PCI networking cards even second hand would do from some computer guy or shop and install on both PC's. Set both PC's in the places in your home. Measure the distance and get the cabel made up at a PC shop anywhere near you. If both cards are installed properly and you are able to access each others computer hard Drives then you should also be able to access the internet. You might need some minor settings to be done on explorer.
