South African shops accuse Shein and Temu of dodging tax

Shein and Temu exploit tax and customs loopholes to cheaply import their products into South Africa, undercutting local retailers, putting thousands of local jobs on the line, and limiting revenue collection.

This is feedback from the executive director of the National Clothing Retail Federation (NCRF), Michael Lawrence, who told 702 that the federation had flagged these issues with the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

The price of manufacturing in this country is exorbitant.
The product of certain policies.
With all the middlemen the prices naturally go up.

It is hard to side with the South African retailers when they are pricing the goods so high. Just feel sorry for the job losses that may happen due to the greed of the SA retailers.

and our local producers are disadvantaged,” he said.
Local producers are disadvantaged because of local unrest, strikes, unions (mafia like), looting, ANC, cadres, egregious prices, etc, etc, etc, etc.....

Sorry but the difference between R50 and R500 can't be made up by duties and VAT. Even if 50% is applied these guys will still beat you with your 500% markups so stop crying.
Yep. Hard to beat that level of employee abuse and exploitation.

Yep. Hard to beat that level of employee abuse and exploitation.
The irony is they take advantage of that employee abuse and exploitation.

I've bought twice now from Temu. Each order was always met with a 15% tax to be paid for customs clearance.
The products are cheap plastic. But are things i would use, that i was unable to find a my local Chinese store.
How much are these local retailers expecting customs to charge me extra.

Etc. etc.
Don’t be a hater just because you can’t afford Temu :sneaky:
There’s plenty of good stuff on there, you just need to know what you are buying and never buy anything clothing related because it’ll probably be garbage.

So I buy a headphone stand worth R20 for either R40, or R200, damn, difficult decision.
