This is the wrong action. We should move to ratify our e-commerce import legislation to introduce a real threshold for imports that is different from the outdated R500 restriction.

As of November, imports under R500 are also subject to the 45% tariff and VAT. Announcing the change, SARS said it had noted “legitimate concerns” which had been expressed about the import of goods, especially clothing, by importers who had not been paying customs duties and VAT, resulting in unfair competition.
Only if they're clothing and don't fall under the R500 gift threshold.

Futile effort, you can't petition SARS.

Nonetheless, fair is fair. If you want the tax dropped on Shein clothing, drop it for the local retailers too. Else tax everyone.

The same must apply to all - no favouritism.

Pfft, the only way ANC listens is when you start burning and destroying government property. Go burn down SARS offices!

THAT may be the only way to stop the flow into the looting coffers, allow natural selection to take place, and the fittest survive.

Only taxpayers should be allowed to vote (it's their money being spent, so they should decide) and only ratepayers should be allowed to vote (it's their properties the rates are to be used for).

It's not an equal playing field though. Local retailers only pay tax on cost price where we pay at retail. They also get mass discounts and tax incentives. You can't petition SARS but you can petition the lawmakers. This is nothing new, other countries have had thresholds around personal imports for ages and some are set at thousands of Rands equivalent. We are way behind.

Tax legislation was written in a time when middlemen still played a valid role in sourcing and supplying products.

Now that they are obsolete, the legislation also needs to be adjusted.

China observers these import tariffs - expect reciprocal tariffs on SA coal, wine, iron, etc.

That will wake up SARS.

Tariffs are tax.
Tax is theft.
SARS is eating all of SA GDP.
Not enough left over for private citizens to grow the economy.

Enough already with all these taxes.

You either have the balls to lead a full-on revolt, or you don't

A revolt will happen when our interest overtakes our GDP and citizens refuse to recognise all this government spending.

I literally Finally ordered items, 6 of which are dresses and tops

Are you saying if those items are R2000, then I can expect to pay around R800 and VAT?

I'm in trouble. I don't know how to turn off the italics on my phone.

Not necessary to have a "full-on revolt".
Just need to spread the message so that taxpayers are more resistant to SARS marketing.
SARS likes to use euphemistic terms like "sin tax", "for your benefit" (sugar tax, CO2 tax, plastic bag tax, tire tax, etc). "protect local industry", "Sector Education Levy" to fool the masses into paying more tax.

Don't fall for it.
Resist taxes (aka theft).

The entire case is written in ANC greed, which we are already so well versed with. the ANC will never pass up an opportunity to get their hands on other peoples money.

Depends on the invoice declaration. The clothing attracts higher duties, the other stuff should attract lower

  • Register objections with SARS paid "research" on proposed taxes (eg Margo commission on VAT,
  • Write letters to SA treasury
  • Vote for political parties that support reducing taxes and more free market rules.
  • Highlight the over taxation issue on Social media (eg myBB) so that taxpayers become aware of euphemisms like "sin tax", "for your benefit" (sugar tax, CO2 tax, plastic bag tax, tire tax, etc). "protect local industry", "Sector Education Levy" which are just taxes on hard working tax payers.

SA is ranked 13th highest in tax-to-gdp ratio worldwide - (26.11%).
see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_by_tax_revenue_to_GDP_ratio
This shows that we over taxed.

"Fight! Fight! Fight!"
