Last year ShopRite and PnP sold Grapetiser for R8.99 - I think maybe PnP still do, these are the big 750ml bottles. Now I see the price is R14.99 ea.
Oddly enough Woolworths sells them for R13.99 - R1 cheaper.

Anyone else notice any substantial food price hikes?

That example was a special offer for Shoprite (limited to 3 per customers). Pick 'n Pay are now doing the same in their Family brand stores. I think it's R9.99. The bigger Pick 'n Pays are more - R13.

I have noticed some price increases though. It's like Pick 'n Pay are chasing Woolworths to be highest. How about R12 per avocado?? - Which are in season now. Honey is also a lot dearer. What I've also noticed is a great deal of price fluctuation in the supermarkets from one week to the next. Stock keeping is also in apparent chaos.

Erm... ever read a newspaper or news website in 2008? ;)

Nope. I just look at prices in store. Grapetiser is a local product. They actually even export to Japan, gf buys it in her local supermarket sometimes - even convenience stores. With fuel price decreases the price shouldn't go
up by such a high percentage. It's not Evan bottled water or Lindt chocolate :).

I think I bought 20 bottles just before Xmas all in one go
for entertainment purposes and such. Their stock was low
so I had to ask one of the managers to help me find and he
got more for me. There were no restrictions.
However, Woolworths are cheaper now in that dept at least.

Could this be a Bait and Switch tactic?

Canal Walk PnP sells the Apple/Grapetiser at R8.99 still, I think, it's a big store.

What is also really cool, is that steamed Thai rice ("Voted best product in the UK") in the little plastic trays. I remember
a Japanese product 4-5 years ago in the same packaging, just 2min steamed rice, Shoprite actually had a buy-one-get-one-free on that one. Also not
advertised and stopped as suddenly as it started.

Sound Advice

You must use the money you saved on Wooleis pork, turkey, beef gammon and hams to pay for your Grapetisers.

The more you spend the more you save, my friend, didn't you know that ;).

Seriously, check the meats out at 75% off, it's cheap.

Pick 'n Pay's price was R13.99 before Christmas and the day after boxing day it was R8.99, rip-off.

Bought some mini samooosas and other mini things from them today and noticed a red "buy 4 and save 33% thing".

I chuckled to myself and thought: "oh Woolies dear, I do not come to you to save"

They don't last long these offers. They even had a guy standing there supervising how many you took. Waterfront is a Family Store AFAIK.

Appletiser is owned by SAB. If I remember it was called Appletise overseas and part of Coca Cola distribution, but now they have the same name everywhere. Their Grapetise is the best grape flavour - better than Monis or that other one.

Pick 'n Pay stores, family stores all have the same price policy, only hypers have different prices and they have different buying structure.

Waterfront is a corporate store not a family store.

Then it should have the same price as the other supermarket (corporate?) stores and no discount unless the one I was in today made a mistake. I was also told that the 'corporate' stores had different prices to both family and hypers.

The food and beverage prices IN THIS COUNTRY and of FOOD MADE IN THIS COUNTRY increased. We are not talking of imported stuff. People have been moaning about it, people on the forums, there have been news articles about it (whoel of last year). We more informed about your world.

Sometimes you get 1.5L Lipton Ice Tea for R10.99 at Spar, other times its R14.99. I think its promos to get people to try it.

I'm convinced it's some sort of marketing idea. Change the prices so often that the customers can't fix a price in their mind. Notice all the little signs everywhere with the RED LABELS and SCISSORS. Often there is no change and that sign is still there.

Likely, but maybe they are allowed to have their own deals confined to one type. I noticed this price differential recently whilst going from a family to a corporate on the same day.
