They've stopped now, but I was watching the 100g Cadburys choc price go UP and DOWN from week to week. It was higher even than Woolworths for a while, then down again to around R6. Maybe the manufacturers are doing it. I know Grapetiser has a campaign on currently. They seem to have a lot of say over pricing.

Likely, but maybe they are allowed to have their own deals confined to one type. I noticed this price differential recently whilst going from a family to a corporate on the same day.

On non adverised lines, yes, could be the case.

I always check out the promotional flyers that I get with my rekord or stuffed into my gate...often things are on sale a whole lot cheaper at certain places, so then I stock up on it if it is something we use, and if I have the money.

and woolies is not so expensive compared to other shops anymore. I rather buy their mince, as it is not so fatty as the ones in the other shops. Also, their ice-cream is the cheapest than those in any other shop. (R29 for 2l soft scoop, and it is very nice). I also only buy lettuce at woolies (R1-2 price difference), but at least it is not wilted by the next day!

I saw and PnP their Christmas cakes (which I never ever buy or eat ) went for R59,99 and then the 26th, they were R20,00. Profiteering during the festive season.

And what about trying to clear out excess or old stock before its spoils? Must they rather throw it away than make it cheaper? Bye bye that thing called sales.

You miss the point completely. I mean, a R40 discount? Shows you how much they marked the price up. And btw, Christmas cake doesn't spoil.

Is marking something up a crime or something? Go to another shop or something.

As long as it doesn't have nuts. They go rancid.

I saw some Ham in Woolworths with a sticker on. "STILL THE SAME PRICE AS LAST YEAR".
I thought that was pretty daft.

well, it is not a case of R40 discount. they were making a loss on it. they dropped the prices to get rid of the stock. I mean, what's the use of xmas cake/chocs etc sitting on the shelf at sell price and it just goes old?

we bought quite a few xmas chocolates for ridiculous prices...

From where. Even P&P are not discounting by much, even for the el-cheapo stuff.

I noticed the price is down to R9.99 at Pick and Pray.

It's R15.99 at Checkers now... R14.99 at Woolworths.

But the best deal is this one. Last year or maybe a year before that, Nestle offered a FREE mug with a large jar of their
instant Nescafe coffee. It said "FREE" on the box. Well guess what, Shoprite priced the items in such a way that the
offer cost a few Rand more than the jar of the same weight sold alone. I asked the Bayside manager why the coffee plus
FREE cup cost more than the Coffee alone and he couldn't answer me. Suffice to say I went to PnP to buy two of
these combo deals.

It was R15.99 last time I bought at PnP, a couple of months ago.
Bought a few today at R9.99
