Shops looted in Soweto over Eskom prepaid meters

Just turn of their power and let them sit in the dark for a few weeks , it wont take too long until they welcome the prepaid meter with open arms.

I always defend my fellow brothers and sisters but this is BS. Protest, sure...but why loot? I don't get this. How can someone justify this in their minds?

The irony.....Two weeks ago Mmusi Maimane told ANC members/supporters they are "Like chickens voting for Colonel Sanders."

It actually makes perfect sense. They used to buy booze and KFC with their money, now they use that money to buy electricity.

If they cannot steal the one they have to steal the other... ;)

******* gonna ***.

I'll let you fill in the blanks.

What a sorry state this beautiful country is in. Corruption and criminals from the top all the way down to the bottom.

I just got my rates bill ....

/reckon I will loot a Nandos and a bottle store to make it all better.

It had f***-all to do with Eskom: the looters were looking for free food & drink ...

I think you hit the nail on the head - these morons are too lazy to work. Lets help ourselves.

And the best part is Eskom has just done a deal with them to write off their R8bn debt in exchange for installing meters. It's a morally outrageous deal, since it basically takes a dump on everyone who has been faithfully paying for 20 years. However, even this isn't good enough, apparently.

Son of a Sowetan Streetwise thief! What a shocker.

So you loot a bottle store and KFC because there's no more free [-]lunch[/-] electricity. Makes perfect sense...

How is there defending people protesting because they can no longer get something for free?

If you honestly think they would pay up for 20 odd years of backlogged electricity bills you must be smoking some good stuff.
Clemency was the only way forward. It would encourage people to jump on the clean slate and start being a rates payer.
At least with people starting to pay from now, it would at least start to fill Eksdom's coffers. Rather than more years of non payment.

It's extremely hard to comment on these sorts of issues these days without sounding like a filthy racist but my earlier comment is pretty much it. Their mentality will never change. It's just take, take, take and move on once it is depleted. Self entitlement and screw everybody else.

That online petition is starting to sound pretty good right about now. A nice escape route for the whities. The tribes can have Azania to themselves.

There is not defending them , which is exactly what I said.

I am not 100% certain of the facts, but as I understood it the ANC government promised free electricity to everyone in Soweto many years back, so surely it is not surprising that people are upset that they are being forced to pay for a good that was promised to be free??

Obviously looting the KFC and bottle store is just opportunism by a few, but the general outrage is understandable. What I don't get is how it doesn't change voting patterns, its not like there isn't a lot of choice out there, we have loads of political parties to choose from.

If they promised it, they must pay for it?

Or did they think it was just going to be a free ride like what they get in guavamint?

Eksdom needs to give these people a deadline and then cut the power. The people will have their opportunity to get on board with the rest of their fellow South Africans who still need to pay for electricity. If they refuse the opportunity to have the slate wiped clean and a meter installed, then they can't complain when the lights go off?

Unfortunately this will not be reality. Protesting, looting and vandalism will continue unabated.
