The scenario I was in with a reckless overtaker couldn't. I was on a bridge with one lane in each direction. I had nowhere to go. I either made it to the end of the bridge before the moron doing the overtaking or I died in a collision with an 18-wheeler truck.

I ended up in a ditch, shaken but alive. Thankfully I didn't roll. However had my car enforced a speed limit I'd be dead.

I've seen videos of people in SA having this happen to them. It's not the safest place on Earth. Under that circumstance should your car be taking control and forcing you to slow down?
You need the full pot tension of your car to get out of unforeseen problems. Recently I overtook a truck that drove very close to center dividing line. The two cars behind me followed me. Halve way next to the truck a second truck unseen by us until then moved over from the yellow line to clear a slower moving truck. suddenly I had two trucks to overtake instead of one. Having two cars following me closely there was no option to fall back but my have the power and speed of my car helped me to safely overtake. The Figo behind me did not. Luckily there were plenty of room for the cars approaching from the front to move into the yellow line to make room. Limiting cars to the speed limit is a very bad idea.

I recently bought a special cable for my For Fiesta, to enable some features on my car using Forscan. Also using that cable for diagnostics, that does not show up on a OBD scanner.
One of the features was to enable auto locking by speed. I mised that feature for years...
Very nice to have, btw.

I noticed that my vehicle has a configuration section that you can set the maximum speed limit, such as 160, 120, etc, so probably a electronic limit, like they do with high powered cars, like that one guy that removed the speedlimiter on his Audi, and put up a high speed video on social media...
Most transportation companies probably insert a speed limiter, but it can vary...

But ultimately, speed is not the problem. PEBSWAS...
(Problem exists between steering wheel and seat)
And with that, vehicles not being roadworthy.

Put eco mode on with your car, than you'll have a limiter :)

I do not if it was an actual requirement at that time, but when I was in Qatar a few years ago for work, all the vehicles that I've ridden in had a buzzer installed that started going off when you exceeded the maximum speed limits on the open road. We drove daily from Doha to Ras Laffan and back, and the buzzer immediately started bugging you when you exceeded the limit, which was quite annoying and loud, forcing you to slow down.

I would be in support of such a measure, but not one actually limiting the speed, which you may need in an emergency situation. I know here in South Africa the wires to the buzzer would simply be cut or unplugged, but there they actually have proper law enforcement and strict punishment, dissuading you even contemplating breaking any laws or regulations.

My Clio does that, it beeps when going over the speed limit picked up by GPS

Speed is not the problem. Its the people crawling over red lights/Stop streets without even slowing down that cause the problem.

You stop they go over and return to fast lane to continue crawling in front of you.

In general its the blatant breaking of all traffic laws in SA. Cause all our "cops" do is inspect licences and run speed traps. Anything else is open for breaking.

How about fitting a device so you can't be on the phone in the car, or you can't drink alcohol while in the car ?

What if someone else overtakes in a reckless manner and you need to be able to reach a glide-off area quickly to prevent a collision? (I've had this very scenario happen to me personally)

What if someone is skipping a light and you need acceleration to avoid them?

What if you're being chased by armed people threatening your life or someone angry at you for some perceived sleight?

Plenty of legitimate scenarios I can think of off the top of my head in which a speed beyond the speed limit is justified.

Sounds like you need a Casspir, not a car...

In South Africa with its high rate of highjackings, murder and other vicious crimes, a victim needs speed to save themselves and the Children
,
Oh yeah, like you don't want to stop at the STOP street because you fear being hijacked.

Why would you overtake in such a reckless manner?

I'd have asked that same question a few days ago, but in the meantime I've noticed that up north people habe a habit of speeding up when you start an overtake, and then you need to pick up speed as fast as possible.

Thing is that same **** then slows down again when you fall in behind him meaning you need quite a bit of speed to pass.

Reading the comments reminds me of all the other road rage threads.

Another car skips the red light and crashes into you. You are are the problem cause you should have driven "deferencely" .

How about we put full blame on people who can't drive?

True, but I've avoided many potential accidents by slowing down at green lights, you have more time to react. Plowing into an intersection at speed especially when you can't see clearly in all directions is suicidal is this shithole.
