I'm not a Nikon person - but as I had a few minutes to kill, checked it out.

Um - it looks to be a much better camera?

So you'd be missing less noise at high ISO, more focus points, better/bigger screen, better IQ (colour depth, dynamic range), higher fps, weather sealer, less shutter lag, faster shutter speed ....

To me personally I'd go for it due to the less noise, more focus points, weather sealed and higher FPS

OK.
The D5000 body only second hand will at best sell for R5500 and thats pristine condition and a very willing buyer, I would aim for about R5000.
I have seen the D7000 Body only available for about R11500 although from the USA you can get it for about R9000, so long you dont mind missing on the warranty.
I went to DXOmark and did a comparison between the D5000, D90 and D7000

Now I add the D90 since it sits between the 2, the D5000 and the D90 sharing the same technology with the D90 having a more full setup while the D7000 is the D90 successor.
The D7000 is by all accounts an excellent camera, however will you get to enjoy all the extra features for the amount you will have to spend?

In terms of ISO you probably never want to exceed 3200 regardless of which of these cameras you use.
In terms of IQ etc they all very close, and while the D7000 is better it does not leave the D5000 embarrassed, and is it really R5000+ better.

If you want the D7000 just get it, if you not sure you need to upggrade or what to upgrade to look at the D90, its a tried and tested camera, not the newest I agree but very good feature set and well respected.

Oh and will you take better photos, doubt it, will the camera have something extra that will make it all that much better, probably not ... just newer tech, minor improvements and a few extra buttons.

Bah, if you Really want it, and can afford it then get it.

D5000 is a good enough camera. What is your reasons for considering the upgrade? What do you use the camera for?

I would love to upgrade my D90 (if I had the spare cash), but it is still more than good enough for what I do... I urgently need more lenses though!

Hey guys

You are right. The camera i have is good enough now for my needs at this stage. It just sometimes its a bother to keep goin in menus to change settings. That was 1 reason and the others well just being better speced wgich at the same time be a better camera in the long run. I guess if i can 5k its worth it to upgrade then. Many thanks guys.

Definitely these two cameras are worlds and age apart. D7000 is an amazing camera.

I was keen on the D7000 until I played with one in the shop. The D5000 rests nicely in my hand. The D7000 felt like a step backward in body design.

If you do, you will end up chasing every new model, which will be every few months. Really not worth it IMO. You just end up loosing cash. Its like a cell phone, there are always new models and realistically will never be able to keep up to date without loosing cash hand over fist.

I plan to keep my current D3100 for at least 2 years and then I will consider a new body, but in the meantime have my eye on a few nice lenses which for me are more important.

I was at Photo Digital World this morning and they told me that the specials from this weekends' Photo and Film Expo can still be had, for today only. The D7000 body only, was/is R9999.

Yea - if not longer!

I browse Flickr occasionally and have seen some awesome photos. I check the body and it's a 30D or 40D that's taken the photo ... so I think features are probably the reason most upgrade rather than IQ?

Why not keep the D5000 and get some good lenses for eg. the sigma 70-200 2.8? bodies get upgrade every 2 to 3 years a good lens you will be able to take from body to body so it will last you if looked after 5+ years.
