History will one day show that showerhead was just the first one
He was the pilot program. In many other ways. He showed the rank and file that you don't need ability, moral compass, etc to head up the party and showed that you can perpetuate industrial scale corruption and get away and even have your party and voters defend you. Violently in some cases.

State capture has always been a thing, perhaps the difference is the extent to which Zuma took it, a start would be not to reach those levels again then hope to work on totally weaning ourselves of it.

The political environment of an incapacitated state that is hugely dependent on business, an electoral system that gives power to the party instead of the electorate, state institutions still have to learn to exercise their mandated power and many other factors make us a sitting duck for state capture, all it needs is a willing participant in power.

While there is more of a spotlight on corruption than previous, almost daily there are reports of it still happening. Besides the corruption, there is the incompetent side where people are sitting in decision making positions that have no idea what they are doing.

state capture continues in the guise of BEE deals and over-inflation of existing contracts,

its practically baked in and part of the landscape by now.

only difference is the ANC now have to find better ways of hiding it, and sending it offshore
where nobody can claim its the spoils of corruption.

AKA, up their Corruption game.

Of course, they won't prevent it. They would be participating like last time... It's not like they changed/reformed so much in the past 5 years, that we could say they won't state capture again...

In economics, a banana republic is a country with an economy of state capitalism, by which economic model the country is operated as a private commercial enterprise for the exclusive profit of the ruling class. Such exploitation is enabled by collusion between the state and favored economic monopolies, in which the profit, derived from the private exploitation of public lands, is private property, while the debts incurred thereby are the financial responsibility of the public treasury.

Such an imbalanced economy remains limited by the uneven economic development of town and country, and usually reduces the national currency into devalued banknotes (paper money), rendering the country ineligible for international development credit.

Status quo?

Sure, BOSASA existed before Zuma was president. But was it involved in state capture before Zuma?
I think the term state capture is being used loosely for corruption. I don't think bosasa was involved in state capture (weekend special, guptas picking ministers and using public funds for lavish weddings) and yet they were called in at the commission (catering event) as the commission (catering event) was covering a lot more than just state capture.

Bosasa captured one particular ministry and the ANC who worked to ensure that their tenders went through. It is capture of a part of the state at least.
