ShowMax CEO reveals what keeps him up at night

Naspers is so close to having a triple play offering, yet so far.

I am in the market for a streaming service to replace Monochoice DSTV.

I am faced by two big questions. And I am sure that these two things are a concern for most South Africans.

1. Just how the hell do I use this service as a tv replacement when there is hardly any affordable media that is supported. Only available on the premium Samsung and LG TV's with built streaming capabilities. Only available for tablets and smartphones. (who the F wants to watch tv on a small screen?! - Yet their adds seems to show this is currently their priority. WTF?!). No Xbox or Playstation support. No Chromecast support. Pah.

2. Data usage. I am sure this is a problem for many other potential customers. So get off your fat ass and negotiate some flat rated ADSL/FIBRE deals (I guess its too much to ask for 3/4G deals?). And no the rip-off Telkom deal does not count.

Meet the enthusiats halfway. Get a Kodi Add-On and Roku support, and have DD5.1 with subtitles. See them come.

Yep... not touching this if you don't make a roku app.

Showmax is so far behind the curve on technology. The only reason they can survive at all is because South Africa doesn't exist as a market for Hulu, HBO Go and BBC iPlayer and the Netflix library is crippled. And I still won't get Showmax.

I don't have a problem with ShowMax, for R99/mth and the cost of a cheap Android TV box it's a steal.

Content will always be problem no matter what platform you use, the recent uproar iro of US NetFlix is a classic example ...

In their defense (as much as I hate it): the service is supported on both Chromecast and Apple TV.

I traded my DSTV subscription for Netflix and later added Showmax. Showmax has local content (with me being a dutchie) but I still prefer Netflix. I do miss the mindless channel hopping and some of the sports, but I am truly better off making the switch. Crystalweb Premium Uncapped is unbeatable as an all round service.

Getting frustrated by the buffering in the 1st 4min, 10mb line, happens whether using Afrihost or Vox, freakin annoying yet Netflix starts off the bat without issues.

Does it have chromecast support? If it doesn't then the CEO should have sleepless nights...

No problems here with CW and now WA on my 10mb line.

The ShowMax app on Apple TV is great.
As for data usage, Uncapped ADSL/Fibre/Wireless is your friend

Netflix' original content is where it's at as far as I'm concerned. They're putting out some great stuff and that alone is well worth the subscription. Any additions are just a bonus.
