ShowMax expanding beyond SA to take on Netflix

Cool, if they can keep their price point with that content they'll sure be a hit.

Competition is always good for the consumer.

Pity about the quality, they really need to look at providing movies at higher res.
Also, their tech support is atrocious. Tickets remain open, no follow through. And when you enquire on an open ticket, they simply open another one.

They need to support more devices. Keep bugging them for an KODI or a playstation app.

They are going to do what they did to payTV in Africa and build another monopoly with ShowMax in the VOD space.

Dying to get this, but not until I can watch on the Roku. For now, Netflix and Plex will do just fine.

Anyone know the kind of penetration they have to date in SA? I am curious about the uptake of Showmax.

ShowMax is taking on Netflix.

Excuse me while I roll around laughing on the floor :D

Anything to do with Naspers involves deep penetration. ;)

Personally, Showmax has been working perfectly for me.

Using a Samsung Smart TV, it streams smoothly and in my opinion very good quality. The fact that the content is locally cached improves the performance. The only criticism is the content, but I don't think we will ever get to the point where one service provider will be able to supply all the content, each one will have his respective exclusivity.

I'd like to know as well to be honest. I might have someone that I can ask actually.

Runs off doing investigations.

FTFY.

They are trying, but they are far behind with regards to features.

You didn't really fix anything. It will do well.

I have Netflix as well as ShowMax (As well as Hulu). It's a good product.
And for those that want to spend less than the price of Netflix, ShowMax is really great. It will just plain do well

I've been testing ShowMax for the last weeks. So while the HBO content is great to have, it's just to irritating to use.

There's no watch history. You can't mouse over to read episode synopsis, instead you're forced to open every single episode to see if you've seen it before.

And that's just the simple stuff.

You have to tie your account to specific devices(What the actual F_ck?) You can't have different profiles for different people. No recommendation engine. You can't like/favourite shows. They will probably never end up on the Roku.

So yeah. They are trying. But they still have a long, long way to go.

Sure. Netflix has quite a few advantages.
But ShowMax have two big advantages over Netflix : Content that Netflix doesn't have and Price

What do you mean, the price is about the same, and Netflix has much, much more content than ShowMax.

The price is not the same (R140 plus UntoTelly vs R99), and it isn't about who has more content. It is that both has content the other doesn't. That means they have an advantage over the other, depending on the customer
