Dark clouds over South African carmakers — with bad news for prices

South African motorists hoping to buy locally made models may want to consider buying soon before the price of their desired set of wheels surges.

The impending shutdowns of ArcelorMittal's Vereeniging and Newcastle long steel mills are expected to not only have a devasting impact on direct jobs but also cause major supply chain disruptions for automotive manufacturers.

They supply a lot more than the auto manufacturing sector. Soon we will get world class steel with the strength of 2 marshmallows from China as our only option.

Why did Arcellor Mittal not make a profit if they were buying their steel from them? Also import-parity pricing means that the steel should still be the same price for the manufacturer for that quality? This doesn't make any sense.

Fsking Jan van Riebeek designing VW's to use so much steel!

And we don’t need the USA or agoa as we have excess jobs - so nothing to worry about there

And before that the metal processing and treatment plants closed. Can no longer get steel treatments like TD coating locally. All the plants that did it closed. Gov does nothing to support local industries. Always looking at private industry with disdain when they complain.

I see Toyota, VW and BMW closing shop locally, they no longer have any incentive to remain in the country, cheaper to be where the steel is in the long run. Boy have the ANC killed any hope this country may have had of any sort of recovery.

ffs...why does it feel like the car industry was under attack last week also...
