Shuttleworth: ‘I’d love to work with Microsoft’

Exchange controls

Yes, in 2001, and have been living in London rather reluctantly since. The primary motivation is exchange controls. I found that every time I wanted to make an investment globally I needed to go through a very random process with the Reserve Bank. These regulations are just not suited for rapid, small investments in risky, forward-looking projects. If they drop the regulations, the moment I’m certain that Ubuntu is on a clear trajectory of its own, I’ll move back to Cape Town. It’s where I want to be.
Kudos for bringing that up on behalf of us all, Mark.

Tell me about it. I once deposited about R2000 into an account of a German exchange student here in SA - she lent me money while on a trip. I got a phone call from the bloody exchange control people because they suspect we've been circumnavigating the whole process and demand to know why I would deposit money into a temporary account.

So we should expect to see Ubuntu sign an agreement with MS along the lines of Xandros and SUSE soon?

I hope the Government takes note of this. This is what they call Brain Drain. All our best minds living and working overseas, because our Government is too lazy to create jobs and just takes money through tax from the poor souls who actually manage to scrape together a few bucks...nuff said

All the best to Mark..I hope Ubuntu is a huge success.

I don't post very often, although i have been reading articles here regularly for a long while.

Just wanted to give credit to RPM and the other mods for always having fantastic informative front page articles, whether they are sourced or homegrown - they are on the money! So thanks to all i appreciate the efforts. ;)

someone should ask in parliament, just how much money is sitting in blocked Rand. For those that do not know, if you leave SA you can only take out just under one million - the rest stays here forever... with only the interest going out

Oh there's a good idea, let's take a quote from the article completely out of context and use it as the article's headline so it appears Shuttleworth is implying something he clearly isn't. Nice one, South African Media.
