Is this, Sigma lense 70-300 DG 1:4-5.6 APO (CANON mount) a decent buy as part of my kit? Planning to use it with my 550D (only have the bundled lenses currently) Can pick on up for R1999 new.

It's a fine lens, for the money. Just make sure you don't get the older, non-APO version.

Pros: chap, fairly sharp, comes with a hood and soft pouch, Macro function.
Cons: AF is slowish (no HSM), no stabilisation.

Mine was sharper than my Canon 18-200mm IS at comparable focal lengths, and had slightly less vignetting.

For about R1.5k more you can get the Tamron AF 70-300mm VC USD lens which is highly rated. This is off amazon uk if you know someone going over.

I've decided to hold out for a bit, and save for 400mm CANON lense.

Is it safe to assume that the corresponding Sigma for Nikon gets the same comments?

Or, what about this?

Edit: Apologies for thread-hijack, just say the word and I'll make a new one.
