Hi,

I've written a little win32 based app (to use with the new high gain antenna), that will monitor the current signal level while you "wiggle" the antenna around

Anyway, it's basically untested (except on my laptop), so don't be suprised if you run it at this stage, and find it does even detect your card (basically the only part the might not work ... I think)

Try not to be too harsh with comments, but let me know.

Here is the link (not sure how long it will be here for)

Works great

Thanks,

It works great here. Now I also know how to interpret the CSQ replies :)

I will be building my antenna sometime this week, and post my results.

There's a nice project for the forum, custom-built antennas!

Maybe rpm can sponsor a price for the best performance/cost ratio unit.

Only problem will be the little connectors....

The others are still busy rebuilding their notebooks after installation....:)

Just joking, sure it's going to be a winner!

By the way what is a Singal Level Meter?

@cyberbob: Thanks for your efforts. Have a negative response for you. When i run the app, it "fails to open port". Any ideas?

Primary port is COM4
Secondary port is COM5

Make sure you are not connected when you open the app. It works fine if the crashboard is open though.

Yes but is logical that if the port is already open, then your app can't obviously open it again. duh. But anyway, it works really well. Thanks cyberbob. Stylin job. :) :) :)

ic, maybe you can merge this thread with the dialer sticky?
I think that might get confusing since they are separate applications, there should be separate threads to discuss aspects of each application in isolation from the other [unless at some point in the future the applications merge and become one].

What I will do instead, is to create a new sticky thread, that has links to the separate threads for both applications, and if more applications get written, a link can then be added to the one sticky thread :).

That's so cool, I just downloaded it and started it without any 3G card inserted and without VMC started, it still said it detected the card. Maybe it just detected that I have the driver installed, not the actual card present:

Checking for precense of Novatel U630 datacard ...
card detected
Trying to detect primary Novatel Port ...
port detected
Trying to detect secondary Novatel Port ...
port detected
opening communication port ...
failed to open port

card inserted, VMC not open:

Checking for precense of Novatel U630 datacard ...
card detected
Trying to detect primary Novatel Port ...
port detected
Trying to detect secondary Novatel Port ...
port detected
opening communication port ...
port opened

With the little antenna on the side of the laptop screen I get:
CSQ 9 -95 dBm

When I unplug the little antenna:
CSQ 4 -105 dBm

VERY NICE, so cool to see the little free antenna making a difference !! :)

I would change "precense" to "presence" in the application.

Are you making a version for Option cards, too?

cyberbob,

If you're up to it, I'll lend you an Option Colt card, if you would like to add support for it in your Level Meter?

I can do the same for all new cards, if you can find the time.
