Why must you purchase a SIM Card of R200 with a new phone if the cost of the sim card is only 50c.

Is the R199.50 the profit of the shop or what

Exactly! And when you lose a phone and do a sim swap the charge you R90 (at vodacom) and the effort to process the swap is not more then 5 minutes on the computer. R89.50 profit!

Vodacom shop in Sandton only charged me R20 for a sim-swap!

Try telling them you already have a Voda sim or whatever SIM they want to sell you. There is no law that says you need 2.

Agreed with R200 i can get 400 sim cards if i want to but one is enough and i'll bet you i'll still get them at a cheaper price if i must take such a quintity.

It's all smoke and mirrors!

We don't want to say that your cellphone costs R599 so, you'll be told your new cellphone is ONLY R399 subject to the purchase (and in store activation) of a R199 SIM pack.

My supplier (I'm in the cellular trade) has not charged me for SIM cards for over nine months! I price my SIM cards at R5 each only to stop people abusing the availability, in general I give 'em free with ANY cellphone purchased or if it looks like R5 is too much for the to pay!

So you're wrong 50c is way over priced!! :)

I price all of my cellphones at their cost, if you want or if you don't want a SIM pack the cost stays the same!

You see where the differance comes in you are in the trade and im not, thats why when you buy a phone from your supplier they will give you the sim card for nothing.

My supplier no longer charges for MTN, Vodacom or Cell C SIM packs! I order around 20 (Vodacom) and a few MTN each week.... Never had anyone ask for a Cell C pack!

I have a small shop and I only put a R5 price sticker on my SIM packs to stop idiots walking off with 20 at a time... If a customer comes in for just a SIM pack I don't usually charge them. As a result I win a customer for life and its cost me nothing in cash terms!

The reason SIM packs are supplied free is simple, once connected the original wholesaler gets his cost back from the network plus a tiny percentage of each and every recharge made!

Its so they can place adverts for a handset (that costs say R499) for "Just R299" but of course follow this in super small print with subject to the purchase and in-store activation of a SIM pack at R199!

In most European countries this form of advert is illegal. In fact showing the public prices that are anything but the final price is not lawful so, you can't show something as 299 plus VAT. You can show both prices but the final price must be shown as the prominent price!
