So this weekend I found an old Ericsson T20 in my drawer and just for kicks I decided to try out the thing and after putting in my Telkom Mobile SIM the stupid thing wouldnt get a signal and I tried again with an MTN sim card and still No network so I just decided maybe the new sim cards are incompatible with old phones and put the phone back in the drawer. When I put the sim back in my iphone it wouldnt pick up network and that was the same with the MTN...no Network after being put in the T20. I just concluded my SIM cards were ruined and following day I went to the Telkom shop to do the sim swap and after telling the gentleman my story that I cant get signal he asked for my number, confirmed my name with the information he got from him PC and gave me the new Sim. What worries me is the old dude did not even even ask for an ID. Nor did he even check my story that the sim card was not working. In other words, someone who knows my name and fullname could have just walked into the shop and did a sim swap on my SIM card.

And did you also swapped out the MTN SIM?

What information have he retrieved from his PC? Was it personal financial questions? Or questings regarding your cellphone numbers and so on, that only you will know and nobody else?

Considering you physically had the SIM card in your possession that you wanted to have swopped isn't that authentication enough?

They refused to do a sim swop for me with proof of address and a driver's license. I had to go back with my ID book

I only swapped the Telkom sim card because thats my primary phone number, the MTN sim is still dead because the last time I did an MTN sim swap I had to buy a new sim and call customer care.

The guy first asked for my phone number and after checking his PC he asked if my name was ***** to which I confirmed and he took a new sim pack, scanned it and gave it to me. Whole transaction took around three minutes. Reason why I found this odd is I had brought my ID to the shop which he never asked nor did he ask some verification questions like what MTN did to me last time I did a sim swap.

I might as well have had a T Mobile SIM in the phone because the guy never physically chekced the sim card in the phone. The phone said No Service on the screen and that was good enough for him. In any case considering the number of sim card fraud he should have at least asked for my identification
