Hi,

Being new to the internet pricing game, I've been looking for an up to date spreadsheet comparing the total inclusive costs across all the the various methods of 4mbs or similar 3G/LTE internet access.

I've been using a telkom mobile prepaid sim in an old cellphone putting out a hot spot as a simple but seriously restricted way to do some basic low gig browsing... I really miss my 4meg uncapped 'all you can eat buffet' I had in my old flat included in our rent and im now itching to get a fixed line...

BUT

I cant quite believe that whichever way i look at it that I will be paying upwards of R700pm excluding any installation or hardware for any fast-ish uncapped adsl offering in my new place??

Am I better off just sticking to the telkom mobile route with their 2+1 gig for simple browsing and then spending R1000 every now and then on their 25+25 gig promotional bundles if i need stream or download anything 'big' ???

Installation is free with self install and if you going with Telkoms special bundles they have and currently they the cheapest.

For my 4 meg line and 40 gb account I am paying R300 for my bundle, since Telkom offers you 25% discount off the price and between 12 am to 6 am is free data.

Ah, thanks ichigo, R300pm sounds way more manageable for usable net. I'd seriously appreciate it if you could direct me to a link? I still work best when i can see costs...

The high cost is not the Data it is the 4mb line speed which is overpriced. With a 3G connection you only pay for the data used.

Thats the price without the discount
http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/internet-bundles/do-premium/

The 25% discount isn't shown so you have to phone 10210 for it
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/553335-25-discount-on-Telkom-ADSL

May say shaped but never been shaped in games or torrent downloads so to me its unshaped.

Yep certainly is but can't find any mobile package which gives the same as Telkoms for the price.

So I have just gotten of the phone with Telkom and they have quoted me:

R425 (less 25% @ R319pm) for the 4mbs line rental + R239pm for the Simple 1 doPremium 20+20 gig package totaling R538
(it also seems you will be locked into a 12 month contract essentially as penalties apply if you cancel within 12 months).

Sadly this isnt R300pm but still seems to me to be the cheapest fixed line offering out there (someone correct me if i'm wrong?)

BUT (again)

For a years usage of 240gigs data (20+20 gig deal over 12months) i will pay R6456 @ R13.45 per gig

I still feel I'm better off with my telkom 3G at R20 per gig with the added benefit of flexibility on prepaid and the option to take my wireless router with me when i need a connection somewhere else...

I think i'm going to concede defeat at the idea of 'cheap' internet for now...

It all depends on how much you use. Mobile solutions will be cheaper than fixed line ADSL up to a point. If I were to guess I'd probably say if you're using 10GB or more per month you're better off with a fixed line.

And there in lies the rub... I seldom 'need' to use more than 10gigs pm regularly but if I had some spare cash lying around I could easily burn it on a few extra pointless downloads.

I just feel like i'm missing a trick to getting cheaper access but i think i'm sitting in the sweet spot for my necessary usage anyway.

Still, it would be great to see all these costs by offer and ISP/network broken down in a simple spread sheet... if some one has seen anything like that, please point me in that direction.

You not getting the bundle price of R554 with the discount is R443 so R538 is wrong unless you including your phone line rental (which doesn't seem to add up) and also its not like you will ever move your line from Telkom anyway.

I pay R580 in total which includes my Internet/Phone Calls and Line Rental
