Any really simple device for elderly non-tech people to stream both Netflix and Showmax? Just plug, play, click with the emphasis on simple to include both Netflix and Showmax.. Any suitable device which matches all these requirements?

I would not go Telkom LIT

At least with Apple TV its got apple behind it that supporting it... Who knows how long Telkom will properly support thier device...

With an apple TV especially the new 4k one even if you dont use 4k you can rest easy that apple will support the platform of at least the next 5 years with updates etc... Telkom wont because they will move onto the next box to make sales

Rather go Apple TV...

Only other option is a Roku... but think the apple TV is more simple

It's Google certified and comes with latest Android TV 7.1.2...

And you obviously haven't actually used it.

It's a piece of **** and doesn't qualify for the required use case.

An Android TV from Google themselves may have been an option, but even that isn't as simple and straight forward as the ATV for the older folk.

Telkom LIT media box - 64 page thread with tech-savvy users having a multitude of issues
Apple TV 4th Gen - Not aware of issues, simple to use, a bit pricey.
Chromecast - not standalone, requires phone
Roku3 - No Showmax support
Kwesé Play - Oddly enough local but does not support Showmax
----------------------------------

Is it fair to say that the only current viable option matching the given criteria is the Apple TV 4th Gen?

It is a bit costly but I cannot find any other viable alternatives.

^ this - get apple , but be prepared to pay - those things are not cheap.
but hey if your not tech savvy you have to pay - personally LIT box with sideload for me cheapest option and not that hard - probably still easier than creating an Apple ID to sideload apps on android.

Shomax works out of the box and Netflix works by installing an APK. Am I missing sonething?

Old people.

Needing to side load an application to make something work is a sure sign of a product failure.

to be fair you don't have to side load netflix or showmax , both are on the device on launch - altough the netflix app that is preloaded on the device has a issue. so would say for a launched product to soon before all was 100% than a product failure. once the netflix app gets certified - this will be hands down the best value for money Media box on the market.

20/20 hind site Telkom should have held onto device rather than launch a device still needing some tweaking. but think come January 2018 this device will be sorted.

Well guess Telkom just waiting on support from Neflix et al. OP can do it for them in the meantime.

Yeah look it certainly (hopefully) can be fixed and then it will be a little bit more straight forward.

And good value for money at that.

Apple TV is more expensive (by a long shot) but would still be a simpler device to use.

****

Neither was actually "on the device" either.

What about the Xiaomi Mi Box.

It does Showmax and Netflix without any funny business and it's less expensive than the Apple TV.

Which requires them to have a Smartphone or Tablet to work and therefore makes it complex.

Did anyone read the OP?

Its the easiest two app in the world to navigate - most old people have smartphones now as well
