Government expects to earn almost R11bn from excise duties on alcoholic beverages in the fiscal year ahead.

The concept of the sin tax is frighteningly ironic coming from our current government.. big glass house that, many stones being thrown.

Anyway with everything being taxed even dop is going up again, Joburgers will probably be hardest hit as they drink more than the rest of the country

What do they do with these sin taxes?

Isn't it disappearing into somebody's bank account?

I doubt the average MyBB user (considering the demographics of this website) will cut down because of an extra 7c or 14c. Maybe on spirits, but that's about all.

I think government should tax incompetent people heavily, that way we can hopefully become a more productive economy... :p...but then the ANC would alienating their entire voter base.

This is good. Will cause many more people to think seriously about giving up these bad habits. :p Seriously, the government is right. The benefits to people's health and the general cost of treatment associated with diseases and accidents caused by these things will be offset.

Sit down and add up how much money you spend on Cigs or Booze every day, week, month and year. You could have bought a new car or some cool gadgets with all that. :D

I would say that I have saved thousands in all the years I gave those things up... but then one of you funny blokes will come along and say you made up for me :p

Be happy that tax on necessities were not raised by the same margins.

These things are luxuries.
