Bizzare. The more they tax this stuff, the less we buy, the more they have to tax to get any income from it.
There is a level of balance here, and I think it was overstepped last year.

I think the whole idea of sin tax, especially on liquor is to make people realise that they need to be responsible. Not stop, but be in control. It hopefully will also target the rather scary trend of the crazy treen drinkers who never think of what effect these things will have on them and their lives.

As for smoking, I think most people agree that it's not a nice habbit, and that getting people to stop is a better idea. I've known some people who are pretty poor, and don't earn a lot, but the first things they do with their cash is buy cigs and alcohol. Then comes food for the family and education for the kids and so on. That to me is just wrong.

So, let's see if I understand the logic ...

Put up the tax to make people responsible. Yeah, right. Do you really think those "poor people" are now going to suddenly stop buying cigs and alcohol? No. They are just going to have less money for food and education for the kids. Then the government can use the "sin tax" to give them more handouts.

Stupidist logic I've heard of.

You not looking at the bigger picture. Its not got to do with just that, gov needs to pay for smoking related illness as well as drunk driving accidents, liver transplants ;) etc People here always whine about paying for free loaders, so taking it out of the tax for healthy people would be bad.. so taxing the source is justified.
