Sipho Maseko addresses Telkom's monopolistic past

Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko said the company is still grappling with its monopolistic past, which has hampered its ability to function in a competitive market.

For decades, Telkom enjoyed a legally protected monopoly in the South African telecommunications market.

Lol, we slapped you around a bit and still got the order.
Yep, MBB is full of complaints on old Telkom if you care to go through the archives. Telkom and its monopoly is the reason for MBBs initial existence.

Yeah MYBB started off as an IRC channel called #MyADSL which was more of a channel for people to complain about Iburst and Telkom by rpm. I recall a couple of regs in there, Debbie, Greg (hellkom), etc

Imaginet started an ADSL petiton site but that thing got SQL injected so bad by Qix, who I think was about 13 years old at the time. He eventually ran a final injection to lock the site that no one else can inject. I think I still have screenshots somewhere.

He went off to be headhunted by Facebook to develop on Instagram and other items and now has a security company in Silicon valley.

Maseko isnt wrong at all, if he wants Telkom to survive then they will need to change the company and its service before they even consider trying to change public opinion.

My username ... thanks to Telkom
edit: Let me guess. For decades there was no competition. Telkom overstaffed with people half assing the job (like government employees, just pitch up, get pay cheque)... easy money for everyone.
Now the same staff sits there.... and the money is not coming in. Sounds like SA SOE to the letter...

"New" Telkom is not that much better.

Though it is nice to hear someone with some clout actually telling the truth for once:

Publicly telling it how it was/is. I take my hat off him and his balsy move.
I hope and pray that the other SOE’s take a leaf out of his book, and start innovating and focusing on real service supply. Monopolies can’t last forever and they will either sink or swim.

I must say rather impressive to admit this. Now you just need to streamline your billing systems as a start.

All i want is the R849 option for 20 mbps premium and yet I have been stuck for 4 months trying to change from R999 Home unlimited. I do not need that product since i never really phone Telkom numbers so what use is unlimited calls?
Error after error on the system, ticket after ticket and it has not been changed.

PS where is your MyBroadband rep??

After years of abuse I finally after a 6 month battle managed to dump Telkom and never been back since either privately or for my companies. But an impressive honesty by Sipho. Trying to switch a fatcat, legislated protected profits company to lean fighting competative machine run by goverment is like hoping that Trump will confess he lost fairly. Telkom held back progress and forced SA private business to install parallel fiber systems to break the monopoly, dig up verges where empty service pipes already existed, made it impossible to leave and kept charging month after month while they decided when to let you go. I grant forgiveness but no trust.
