Sipho Maseko's warning about 10GB free data

Article is conflating things. The free 10GB is a separate issue. Currently network operators have social obligations which they circumvent by paying a fine that's a lot smaller than the financial cost of implementing those obligations. That's like the competition commission fining companies a few million for market collusion that makes them billions. It should change and there should be severe consequences.
 
The best thing about this article is the statement : "every household will have access to 10GB per month without failure because that’s what this government will deliver.” Ha ha, really now, "deliver"? Nothing much has been delivered in almost 3 decades. I love the humour.
 
Mobile networks always fight against anything that is meant to improve data affordability.

It must be simple as losing your license if you don't comply.

Households should be able to claim it via ussd by after registering their address and ID.

1 x registration per address.
 
All this and home affairs runs of a 2 Meg line with everyone waiting for them to come on line and function effectively. Home affairs should be open until 18h00 everyday until every backlog is sorted out.
 
And once government supposedly delivers, then around election time, it will be a case of "see what the anc did for you". Giving everyone 10GB of data will only increase theft of cellular devices, robberies of cellular stores, increase in Whatsapp and Telegram scams and a increase in ANC and EFF propaganda. Government does nothing in this country, the ANC does everything, from corruption and financial mismanagement, to blatant tgeft and murder. But hopefully not for much longer.

Personally I am hoping that South Africa will say - despite whether you are rich or poor, whether you are employed or unemployed, the ANC fusked up, and should just pi$$ off, because that government could deliver shidt in a sewage plant.

Yeah but to be honest, Home Affairs could run on a 1GBps line and still thebstaff will find ways to sabotage the equipment. It's down to work ethics, not connectivity. You will probably find a Mirriam or Thandi or Susan unplugging the main router to vacuum, and then everyone will just sit back and say "dee seestem, she is offline" while getting right back to listening to pirated music on their government sponsored phones. Nobody checks because it is not their job, and if you make it their job, then they want a substantial increase. It's the story of an entitled South Africa with no education and a lot of gall.

He's right about this bit. And government really shouldn't be dreaming up free data and allocation amounts and then shunting the responsibility for making the pie in the sky a reality onto commercial network operators. I wonder if they first consulted with them on the costs and feasibility for such a scheme. Suppose the networks could provide the free data at like 2kbps and least priority.
 
10GB is enough for me (already have fibre). Average usage is ~5GB/m. Maybe 10GB when on holiday.

Means revenue from me will drop to almost zero for whichever MNO get's saddled with me.

I'll likely move from Telkom to MTN for data and keep Telkom SIM for calls. IE, MTN get nothing and Telkom a very little for normal calls.

I'm sure there are lots of people in this bracket. I can't see this being sustainable.

Maybe 1GB?
