ok my sister wants to skype her bf, in canada, shes NOT doing it from my pc, so she set up her own, i have the router *billion standard* in my room. Her room is approx 60m *big house* from my room.

What would be the most cost effective way of achieving connectivity from her computer to the router next to my machine?

Thank you in advance.

Buy a 60m long ethernet cable.

Drill a hole in the roof

Feed the cable through the roof and back through the hole u drilled in her room...

Voila

More expensive way - Buy a wireless extender

What about placing the router in a central position in the roof and both of you connecting wirelessly? It will be far easier to pick up a signal through the roof than through 60m of wall.

nice :) hey how much does 60m *not sure which cat* go for?

Cant remember to be honest... Got it a loooong time ago

I dont have 60m , more like 30m, but im sure it will be much less than a wireless extender will cost you.

Jeez what a rip that's what I used to pay a year back for RG60 coax cable. Bought 100meters CAT5e Solid core for around R220 then. Surely the price hasn't increased that much?

Where are you located?

Anyway rather do it proper and get 2x 8P8C housings and run the cable between them, you don't need a crimp tool to wire the housing. Then just buy pre-made CAT5 cable to run from the housing to the computer.

btw. This is what I mean by housing:

EDIT: I see the price has really increased but you can still get CAT5e solid core for around R3 if you shop from the right place. Solid core is best when wiring permanently (IE. the cable won't be moving around)

Last time I bought from CompuCable in Pretoria, it worked out to approximately R2.50 per metre. R1.50 per RJ-45, R1.00 per boot and free crimping.

Your best bet is what fxit said, go with wired man. Much more stable than wireless. Even if you buy a range extender, your signal may be affected by all sorts of objects, walls, doors, stuff in between your rooms etc. Peace of mind, go wired, run cat5e in ceiling and drop down in both rooms, sorted :)

I hate cables in the air myself - I would dig a shallow and narrow hole, then put some PVC conduit into the ground and run the cable through that. The grass won't take too long to grow over it and hopefully you don't have paving over the whole area. If you are going to run it between two buildings in the air, I seriously recommend running steel cable between the buildings and cable-tying it to the steel cable as it will sag over time.

PS. Wireless will work but can give problems with Skype if your connection isn't the best.
