I was with MTN for many years on wireless data. Early last year I started getting Timed Out on occasion and then it dropped to No Connection. I ported to VC and have been flying since.
Now my wife is still with MTN but on Voice Calls only. She also started getting SOS Only on occasion, but it seems to be now permanent. What's going on? She now has to port as well. Her settings are All Networks, but only VC works.

Maybe call MTN and ask them to refresh her number on their network (not sure if this is the right term) I had a problem some time last year where i would lose network all of a sudden an once went for almost the whole day and they insisted its my phone and i must reboot yada yada i didn't let up and asked them to try something else, finally got through to a call center agent who seemed to actually not read from the script, and listened to what I had to say she said she will refresh my number on the network. That seemed to work.

i second that or it could be the physical damage on the sim card itself.
