Hi,

I am on iBurst and am using skype in conjunction with a dualphone . It works amazingly for me in Cape Town (our network seems to be separate to the rest of the country) So how is it in JHB and Durbs?

The phone i am using is a cordless DECT phone with a USB cable and telkom line. So you can receive and make calls from the phone on both telcon and skype (seamlessly!) go check it out: www.dualphone.co.za

It rocks for me!

I called my sister this morning in the US for 25 mins. Cost me approximately R2.50.

Telkom will cost me approx 25m x R2 or R2.50 - call it R50. How is that for a saving!

That works out to 5% of the cost of telkom + a bit of bandwidth. It uses about 3-16 kilobytes/sec depending on which codec used. so lets call it 16kb or 2Kb/sec. Thats 3MB for the 25min conversation. LOVELY!

This was using the dualphone

Skype has its own built-in directory / search function. The Skype phone seems like a cool gadget, pity it's only windoze....

I chatted to the product manager and he said that there is no support for MAC or Linux unfortunately.

But there are other options they are looking at at the moment with voip services / skype products.

I think Skype will only work well if you have not been capped...

Skype on Mac

If you are on a mac & using skype, pair your bluetooth headset with the mac & tell skype to use the bluetooth connection. Works like a charm!

IC there is a interesting website.

www.testyourvoip.com

I usually get between 3 - 4 on both iburst and isdn, which is rated between a crummy cell phone (3) and a good cell phone (4). which is kinda how i would describe it.
Run it and let us know what you score.
